Job Description:
We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and/or Veterinary Assistant to join our specialized veterinary ophthalmology team. The ideal candidate is passionate about providing exceptional patient care, brings a positive and proactive approach to their work, and is eager to expand their knowledge and skills in veterinary medicine. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with our doctors, assisting with both routine procedures and specialized diagnostic and surgical treatments in a dynamic and rewarding environment.
Role Responsibilities:
- Patient Handling & Restraint: Safely and compassionately hold pets for veterinary technicians during procedures such as blood draws, catheter placements, and other diagnostic tests, ensuring patient comfort and minimizing stress.
- Diagnostic Testing Assistance: Assist with specialized diagnostic ophthalmic tests, including TonoVet for intraocular pressure measurement, Schirmer Tear Tests (STT), fluorescein staining for corneal exams, and basic bloodwork (BW). You'll have the chance to learn and develop skills specific to veterinary ophthalmology.
- Daily Patient Care: Ensure that in-patients receive the highest level of care by maintaining clean bedding, providing fresh water, and taking dogs for walks as needed. You will help monitor their condition and comfort throughout their stay.
- Monitoring Vital Signs: Assist with routine monitoring tasks, including measuring blood pressure and blood glucose levels, ensuring the accurate assessment of patient health.
- Surgical and Procedural Check-ins: Help check in patients for surgeries and procedures, ensuring that all necessary paperwork and health information is collected and up-to-date.
- Operating Room Preparation: Play a key role in getting the operating room ready for procedures, ensuring all surgical instruments are properly sterilized, wrapped, and organized for use.
- Instrument Care: Learn and practice the proper cleaning, sterilization, and wrapping of surgical instruments to ensure they meet the highest standards of sterility and patient safety.
- Medication Management: Assist in drawing up medications and calculating appropriate drug dosages for each patient, working under the supervision of the veterinarian to ensure safe and accurate administration.
- Surgical Assistance: Participate in surgeries by assisting with patient preparation, anesthesia monitoring, and surgical support. You'll also monitor patients throughout the procedure and aid in their post-operative recovery, ensuring they are stable and comfortable.
- Patient Recovery: Provide care and attention during post-surgery recovery, monitoring vital signs and ensuring that each pet recovers smoothly and comfortably after anesthesia and surgery.
- General Cleaning & Maintenance: Ensure that exam rooms, treatment areas, and kennels are kept clean, sterile, and organized. This includes routine cleaning tasks and maintaining a well-organized work environment that supports optimal patient care.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a veterinary clinic (ophthalmology experience is a plus, but not required).
- Ability to safely and compassionately handle animals.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn specialized diagnostic and surgical skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to perform tasks independently while also contributing to the overall team dynamic.
