Electrical Engineer – Design Standards Unit (PANYNJ)

Position Overview
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the Engineering Department's Quality Assurance Division within the Design Standards Unit. This role focuses on the technical review and coordination of electrical design submissions for Tenant Alteration Applications (TAA) and Design Audit projects across Port Authority facilities. The selected candidate will ensure compliance with applicable building codes, Port Authority design standards, and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Review electrical design documents, drawings, specifications, calculations, and reports for code and standards compliance.
- Evaluate medium-voltage electrical systems (over 600V), power distribution, fire alarm systems, cathodic protection, and radio frequency systems.
- Perform technical reviews of Tenant Alteration Applications (TAA) and Design Audit projects.
- Coordinate review comments from multiple engineering disciplines and prepare formal comment memoranda.
- Interface with tenant architects, engineers, consultants, and Port Authority stakeholders to resolve technical issues.
- Attend technical review meetings and facilitate project approvals.
- Assign and track multidisciplinary code reviews.
- Process project submissions and maintain workflow through various electronic systems including SharePoint, Trimble, and Adobe platforms.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in building electrical design, code review, and construction.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) License in New York and/or New Jersey is required.
- Demonstrated experience with:
o Medium-voltage systems (600V and above)
o Fire alarm systems
o Cathodic protection systems
o Radio frequency systems
- Strong knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and building systems.
- Experience supporting transportation, aviation, transit, infrastructure, or large commercial facilities is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively coordinate among tenants, facility representatives, and technical reviewers.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn agency-specific software platforms.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have a combination of electrical design, plan review, code compliance, and project coordination experience. Candidates with backgrounds in airports, transit systems, transportation facilities, government agencies, consulting engineering firms, or large institutional projects will be particularly well-suited for this assignment.
Work Environment
- Hybrid work arrangement based at the World Trade Center in New York City.
Compensation
- The good-faith hourly pay range for this position is approximately $65–$80 per hour, depending on
experience, qualifications, and client requirements.
