Formed in 1900, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission was the nation’s first bi-state partnership established to protect and conserve natural lands, as well as create and maintain the Palisades Interstate Parkway.
Today, the New Jersey section of Palisades Interstate Park Commission is about twelve miles long and half a mile wide, with 2,500 acres of wild Hudson River shoreline, uplands, and cliffs — just minutes from midtown Manhattan!
The Palisades Interstate Park Commission is looking to add a Maintenance Worker to help maintain our park system and parkway.
*This position will begin as a temporary role with the intention of converting the right candidate to a permanent, full-time employee. Permanent status offers an annual salary and full benefits including medical, dental, and pension.*
DEFINITION
Under the supervision of a supervisor in the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, performs the unskilled or semi-skilled manual work involved in road construction and maintenance operations, which may include a variety of duties requiring physical exertion, manipulative ability, the routine use of hand machine and/or power tools and in the absence of the regular Truck Driver or Equipment Operator or during emergencies or as the work load dictates, operates trucks, graders, tractors or other maintenance equipment; does relates work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
-Uses bituminous materials and various aggregates for the repair and maintenance of Park roadway pavement.
-Repairs and maintains Commission drainage systems and structures of all types.
-Mows grass, cuts weeds, clears brush and maintains slopes and roadsides, picks up litter and debris and maintains picnic areas in an orderly condition.
-Constructs, paints and maintains guard rails.
-Operates small power mowers and other less complex power equipment or power tools.
-Cleans and paints various Commission equipment.
-Drives trucks or tractor mowers of various types, including trucks used for highway maintenance construction work, road oiling, snow plowing or ice control work, mowing operations and other motorized equipment; assists with the repair and installation of snow plows and spreaders.
-Picks up, loads on the truck and delivers materials when operating in capacity of relief driver.
-Checks, cleans, greases, changes oil, washes and makes minor adjustments to trucks, tractors and other motorized equipment.
-When operating as relief driver or operator, keeps simple records of receipts, deliveries, fuel consumption and mileage.
-Performs snow removal and ice control work at any time of day or night.
-May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS
Experience: one (1) year of unskilled and semi-skilled laboring work
- Carpentry and Masonry experience preferred
License:
-Appointees may be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
-Appointees may be required to obtain an articulated license issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles within their working test period.
Knowledge and Abilities:
-Considerable knowledge of the care, maintenance and safe and efficient operation of trucks and other maintenance equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, servicing of batteries and care of tires and lights.
-Considerable knowledge of the proper use and care of hand and power tools.
-Considerable knowledge of standard practices in road maintenance operations.
-Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written instructions.
-Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
-Ability to maintain simple records.
-Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
-Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
