Location: Port Townsend, WA
The Public Works Department’s Solid Waste Division is seeking a customer service-oriented individual for a seasonal position on the Transfer Station team in Port Townsend. The Solid Waste Technician I is responsible for assisting customers in the scale house, processing cash and credit transactions, and directing traffic on the tipping floor to support safe and efficient operations.
This is a temporary full-time position through December, with the possibility of an extension.
Minimum Qualifications: Responsible for safely supporting operations at a County transfer station or drop box site. Duties include processing customer transactions, collecting fees, inspecting incoming waste for prohibited materials, directing traffic during unloading, operating the scale house and equipment such as a forklift, and maintaining clean, organized facilities.
This role requires strong customer service skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work in an active outdoor environment. Applicants must be able to stand, walk, and operate tools for up to eight hours per day, occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, and demonstrate good judgment and self-direction.
Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) AND demonstrated experience in one or more of: traffic control, manual labor, construction, customer service, and/or cash handling; or equivalent combination of education and experience and valid WA State Driver’s License.
Compensation: Teamsters Grade A4-A position, starting pay typically $23.70 per hour, full pay range: $23.70 to $29.21 per hour. Medical benefits, including dental and vision. Retirement provided through Washington State DRS. Plus 11 paid holidays, PTO, and bereavement leave. May include weekend hours.
Workweek: Facility is operated Monday – Saturday. Flexible scheduling may be provided depending on operational needs.
