Histology Laboratory Assistant
Monday thru Friday with the hours of 6:00PM - 2:00AM (Flexibility Required)
Position Summary
The Histology Laboratory Assistant supports daily histology laboratory operations by assisting with specimen handling, tissue processing activities, and general technical tasks under the supervision of histotechnologists and laboratory leadership.
Note: We are open to hiring candidates without direct experience who demonstrate enthusiasm, reliability, and a desire to develop new skills
Responsibilities
· Ensure accuracy and integrity of samples received in the histology department.
· Pre-sort, scan, track, and route specimens throughout the histology workflow.
· Accession specimens by entering patient demographics, physician information, and test requests into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
· Verify data accuracy prior to and after LIS entry.
· Maintain accurate records of all testing performed during assigned shifts.
· Communicate effectively with clients, pathologists, and laboratory staff.
· Assist with assigned technical tasks under the supervision of histotechnologists, including microtomy, embedding, grossing, and related histology procedures.
· Perform routine staining procedures and coverslipping of stained slides.
· Ensure proper storage and disposal of specimens and chemical waste in accordance with laboratory policies.
· Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
· File slides and tissue blocks upon completion.
· Monitor and maintain laboratory inventory and supplies.
· Validate and process control tissue for testing as required.
· Clean, sterilize, and organize workstations as needed.
· Perform laboratory quality control procedures in compliance with established protocols.
· Perform additional duties as assigned by laboratory management.
· Adhere to all federal, state, local, and organizational regulations, including CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety policies.
Requirements
- Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred; High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Experience working in the healthcare field is preferred.
- Knowledge of grammar and medical terminology required.
- Accurate typing skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be reliable, responsible, and dependable.
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
