Vehicle Equipment Installation Technician (Truck & Van Upfitter)
We are seeking a skilled Vehicle Equipment Installation Technician to join our team. This position is responsible for installing commercial equipment and accessories into new work trucks and vans for customers including electrical contractors, HVAC companies, plumbing contractors, carpenters, garage door companies, telecommunications providers, municipalities, and new vehicle dealerships.
Unlike an automotive repair technician, this role focuses on customizing and outfitting brand-new commercial vehicles to meet each customer's specific business needs. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on work, takes pride in quality craftsmanship, and has strong mechanical aptitude.
Primary Responsibilities
- Install shelving systems, ladder racks, partitions, storage bins, drawer systems, and cargo management equipment.
- Install trailer hitches, running boards, toolboxes, headache racks, and other commercial accessories.
- Mount lighting, backup alarms, safety equipment, and other vehicle accessories.
- Perform basic 12-volt electrical wiring for accessories such as warning lights, work lights, inverters, cameras, and auxiliary equipment.
- Read installation instructions, blueprints, and work orders to ensure accurate installations.
- Safely use hand tools, power tools, drills, rivet guns, and measuring equipment.
- Inspect completed installations to ensure quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Work closely with team members to complete projects on schedule.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in automotive accessories, truck equipment installation, fabrication, mechanical assembly, carpentry, construction, or related hands-on work is preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with hand and power tools.
- Basic understanding of 12-volt electrical systems is preferred but can be taught.
- Ability to accurately measure, drill, assemble, and install equipment.
- Ability to read and follow installation instructions and technical drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working inside commercial vehicles.
- Comfortable working in a shop environment and using various power tools.
What Makes This Position Different
This is not an automotive repair position. Technicians work primarily on brand-new trucks and vans, installing commercial equipment and accessories rather than diagnosing or repairing vehicles. Every project is different, providing a variety of work and the satisfaction of transforming a standard vehicle into a customized work truck designed for a customer's business.
