About XPAK Robotics, Inc. — XPAK Robotics is a fast-growing designer and manufacturer of custom robotic and mechanical end-of-line packaging automation systems. Every system we deliver is custom-engineered, including the controls that bring it to life. Our team is small, technically driven, and moving quickly — if you want to write the software that runs real machines on real production floors, this is the place for you.
Job Overview
We are looking for a PLC Engineer to take ownership of custom controls software across our automation systems — from initial program development through in-house testing and final on-site commissioning. You will write and debug PLC logic, build and refine HMI interfaces, and work hands-on with mechanical and electrical teams to bring complete systems to life. This role spans the full controls lifecycle: you'll be writing code at your desk one week and standing on a customer's production floor commissioning that same system the next.
Responsibilities
- Develop custom PLC software for robotic palletizers, case erectors, conveyor systems, and other end-of-line packaging automation
- Design and build HMI screens and operator interfaces tailored to each customer's process and operators
- Program and integrate robot controllers (FANUC, ABB, Doosan, or similar) with PLC-driven system logic
- Conduct in-house functional testing and debugging of control systems prior to shipment
- Travel to customer sites to commission systems, troubleshoot issues, and support startup through full production handoff
- Develop and maintain safety circuit logic in accordance with applicable machine safety standards
- Collaborate with mechanical design and project engineering teams throughout the design and build process to ensure controls integrate cleanly with mechanical systems
- Create and maintain controls documentation, including I/O lists, network architecture diagrams, and program documentation
- Provide remote and on-site troubleshooting support for systems in the field as needed
Experience
- 3–8 years of experience programming PLCs in an industrial automation or machine building environment
- Strong proficiency with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation platforms (Studio 5000, RSLogix) — XPAK's standard controls stack
- Experience building HMI applications, ideally with FactoryTalk View ME or similar platforms
- Solid understanding of industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, device-level networks) and I/O architecture
- Hands-on experience testing, debugging, and commissioning control systems — not just writing code at a desk
- Working knowledge of machine safety circuits and standards (PLd Cat. 3 or similar)
- Willingness to travel for on-site commissioning and startup support (estimated 20–30%)
- Strong troubleshooting instincts and comfort working independently on a production floor under time pressure
Pay: From $100,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- 401(k)
- Flexible schedule
- Paid time off
- Relocation assistance
Work Location: Hybrid remote in North Brunswick, NJ 08902
