The role of the A Technician is to perform all functions of a fully-qualified repair technician under minimal supervision
Role Summary
The A-Level Technician is the most experienced technician in the service department and is responsible for advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and mentoring junior technicians.
Primary Responsibilities
- Diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment failures.
- Perform major component repairs including engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Utilize manufacturer diagnostic software and technical schematics.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for difficult repairs.
- Support service writers with technical repair information.
- Mentor B-Level and C-Level technicians.
Experience
- Typically 7–10+ years equipment repair experience
- Manufacturer certifications preferred.
Performance Expectations
- Recovery Rate: 95% +
- High diagnostic capability
- Minimal comebacks
- Leadership within the service department.
Tool Requirements
A-Level Technicians must provide and maintain a complete professional tool set necessary to independently perform all mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical repairs.
Typical tools include:
- Complete metric and standard hand tool sets
- Torque wrenches and specialty service tools
- Electrical diagnostic tools (multimeter, test equipment)
- Hydraulic diagnostic tools and gauges as applicable
- Personal tool storage
The dealership will provide manufacturer diagnostic software, specialized shop equipment, and proprietary service tools.
