Position Summary
The Dock Assistant supports Feed Louisville's food rescue operations by assisting with the daily intake, organization, storage, and movement of rescued food and donated goods. Working alongside the Inventory Manager, this position helps ensure incoming donations are received efficiently, handled safely, accurately recorded, and distributed to the appropriate storage areas or programs.
This is a physically active position that requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to food safety. The Dock Assistant plays an important role in helping Feed Louisville maximize the amount of food that reaches our community while minimizing waste.
This position works alongside the Inventory Manager, Food Rescue Drivers, chefs, and reports directly to the Executive Chef.
Essential Responsibilities
Food Rescue Intake
- Receive food rescue donations from grocery stores, distributors, restaurants, farms, and other donors.
- Help unload delivery vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Weigh, record, and document incoming donations.
- Sort donations by category and condition.
- Assist with identifying food that requires immediate refrigeration or freezing.
- Help ensure all donated food is handled according to Feed Louisville food safety standards.
- This role will require a safe food handling license, which can be obtained after hire.
Inventory & Warehouse Support
- Organize incoming products within coolers, freezers, dry storage, and warehouse areas.
- Rotate inventory using First-In, First-Out (FIFO) practices.
- Maintain organized storage areas that promote efficiency and food safety.
- Move products between storage areas and production spaces as directed.
- Assist with periodic inventory counts and inventory organization.
- Monitor storage areas for cleanliness and product quality.
Distribution Support
- Pull and stage food orders for community partners and internal programs.
- Assist with loading delivery vehicles.
- Help prepare grocery redistribution orders and community meal distributions.
- Ensure products are accurately assembled and ready for scheduled pickups and deliveries.
Warehouse & Dock Operations
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized dock and warehouse environment.
- Break down boxes and packaging materials and assist with recycling and waste removal.
- Operate pallet jacks and other warehouse equipment safely (training provided as needed).
- Report damaged products, equipment issues, or safety concerns promptly.
- Assist with general warehouse projects and facility organization.
Transportation Support
- Serve as a backup driver for food rescue or food distribution routes when needed.
- Assist with loading and unloading vehicles.
- Support logistics activities during periods of high donation volume.
Community Engagement
- Interact professionally and respectfully with food donors, volunteers, community partners, clients, and visitors.
- Help create a welcoming and positive environment for volunteers working on the dock.
- Represent Feed Louisville's mission and values in every interaction.
Qualifications
- Warehouse, food service, logistics, grocery, or distribution experience preferred.
- Professional restaurant kitchen experience would be a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Commitment to food safety and sanitation practices.
- Comfortable working collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
- Basic computer or tablet skills for inventory tracking are preferred.
- Experience and/or certification in forklift operations a plus.
- Valid driver's license required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and lift throughout the workday.
- Ability to work in warehouse, cooler, freezer, and loading dock environments.
- Ability to safely move pallets, carts, and food products throughout the facility.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a part-time position scheduled for 20 hours per week. Compensation is $18.00 per hour.
