Duties
- Safely operate commercial vehicles such as school buses, transit buses, and paratransit vans in accordance with all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations.
- Assist passengers with wheelchair assistance and provide support for individuals with special needs or mobility challenges.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicle mechanical safety and compliance with vehicle codes; perform routine maintenance checks as needed.
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR and first aid when necessary.
- Manage passenger boarding and disembarking processes while maintaining behavior management and student discipline when applicable.
- Communicate effectively with passengers, colleagues, and dispatchers using clear language; respond quickly to traffic changes or route adjustments.
- Ensure passenger safety by adhering to school policy knowledge, child care standards, and senior care protocols when transporting vulnerable populations.
Experience
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for passenger transport; experience driving school buses, transit buses, or paratransit vehicles preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations at the state and local levels.
- Experience working with children, seniors, or individuals with disabilities; familiarity with behavior management techniques is a plus.
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are an advantage for serving diverse communities.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for vehicle inspections or assisting passengers; mechanical knowledge is beneficial.
- Prior experience in emergency response procedures such as first aid, CPR, and emergency stop procedures required.
- Proven ability to respond quickly to traffic changes and adapt routes efficiently while maintaining high safety standards.
