Position Summary
Essayon Construction Group is seeking an experienced Superintendent to oversee field operations forcommercial wood framing and heavy timber construction on a major project in Franklin, Tennessee. This position is responsible for directing the daily activities of subcontracted rough carpentry and heavy timber framing crews while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with project plans and company quality standards. The Superintendent will report directly to the Senior Superintendent and work closely with the Project Manager, General Contractor, and subcontractor foremen to coordinate field operations. The ideal candidate is a seasoned construction professional with extensive commercial wood framing experience, strong leadership skills, and the ability to successfully manage multiple crews in a fast-paced environment.
Primary Responsibilities
Field Leadership:
- Supervise all daily wood framing and heavy timber operations.
- Direct subcontracted framing crews to ensure productivity, quality, and schedule objectives are achieved.
- Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and deliveries to support uninterrupted workflow.
- Plan daily and weekly work activities with subcontractor foremen.
- Monitor production and implement corrective actions when necessary.
Subcontractor Performance Management
- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with subcontractor foremen and crew leaders.
- Coordinate and direct multiple framing subcontractors to achieve project milestones.
- Verify subcontractor manpower commitments are maintained throughout the project.
- Monitor productivity and compare actual performance against the project schedule.
- Hold subcontractors accountable for workmanship, quality, safety, and schedule performance.
- Identify performance issues early and work with the Senior Superintendent and Project Manager to implement corrective action plans.
- Ensure subcontractors understand project expectations, sequencing requirements, quality standards, and safety policies before beginning each phase of work.
- Evaluate subcontractor performance and provide input for future project assignments.
Project Coordination
- Execute work plans developed with the Senior Superintendent and Project Manager.
- Coordinate framing activities with the General Contractor and other trades.
- Identify field conflicts and recommend practical solutions.
- Participate in coordination meetings and schedule updates.
- Assist in developing short-term look-ahead schedules and manpower plans.
Quality Control
- Inspect framing work for compliance with contract documents, project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and company quality standards.
- Verify proper installation of structural framing, engineered wood products (LVL, LSL, PSL, and glulam), heavy timber members, structural connectors, and hardware.
- Track deficiencies and ensure timely completion of corrective work.
- Coordinate inspections and verify readiness for municipal and third-party inspections.
Safety Leadership
- Promote a culture where safety is a core expectation on every project.
- Enforce OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections and toolbox talks.
- Ensure subcontractors maintain safe work practices and proper housekeeping.
- Report and document incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain accurate daily reports documenting manpower, production, deliveries, inspections, weather impacts, and project progress.
- Communicate effectively with the Senior Superintendent, Project Manager, General Contractor, subcontractors, inspectors, and suppliers.
- Assist with field documentation related to RFIs, change orders, scheduling updates, and punch lists.
- Maintain photo documentation of project progress when required.
Required Qualifications
- 7–10+ years of commercial wood framing construction experience.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a Superintendent or Lead Foreman supervising commercial framing operations.
- Demonstrated experience managing subcontracted framing crews on commercial construction projects.
- Extensive knowledge of commercial wood framing systems and heavy timber construction.
- Strong understanding of engineered wood products (LVL, PSL, LSL, glulam), structural hardware, framing layouts, and construction sequencing.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, specifications, and project
- schedules.
- Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to make sound field decisions while maintaining production and project schedules.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with Procore or similar construction management software is preferred.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 30 Certification.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Experience with commercial, multifamily, hospitality, institutional, or mixed-use construction projects.
- Experience coordinating multiple framing subcontractors on large-scale projects.
- Working knowledge of structural inspections, framing quality control, and project scheduling.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to walk active construction sites for extended periods.
- Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely navigate uneven terrain and elevated work areas.
