Safety Specialist- Fleet Safety

Position Summary
The Fleet Safety Specialist is responsible for the daily execution, administration, and continuous improvement of the company’s fleet safety programs. This role serves as the subject matter expert for vehicle safety, driver performance, compliance, and risk reduction initiatives.
The successful candidate will translate safety policies and regulatory requirements into effective field practices by conducting safety audits, analyzing telematics data, coaching drivers and managers, and implementing proactive solutions to improve transportation safety performance and reduce preventable incidents.
This position requires a hands-on safety professional who can build strong relationships with drivers, operations leaders, and support teams while promoting a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Essential Responsibilities
Fleet Safety & Compliance
- Administer and enforce company fleet safety policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Ensure compliance with DOT/FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable safety regulations.
- Monitor driver qualification requirements, training records, certifications, and compliance documentation.
- Support internal safety, DOT, and insurance audits by preparing documentation, reports, and corrective action plans.
- Conduct driver, vehicle, and facility safety audits to identify hazards and opportunities for improvement.
Driver Training & Coaching
- Train, coach, and mentor new and existing drivers on safe driving practices, equipment operation, and company expectations.
- Deliver and continuously improve driver safety training programs.
- Conduct road tests, ride-alongs, field observations, and performance evaluations.
- Utilize Samsara telematics and video event data to identify unsafe behaviors and provide targeted coaching.
- Partner with transportation leaders to develop corrective actions and retraining plans when needed.
Incident Investigation & Risk Reduction
- Lead investigations involving vehicle accidents, injuries, near misses, and safety-related incidents.
- Conduct root-cause analysis and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
- Review telematics data, reports, and other available resources to identify contributing factors.
- Partner with Human Resources, Loss Prevention, Operations, and other stakeholders on investigations and follow-up actions.
- Participate in incident review meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.
Safety Program Management
- Support the development, implementation, and improvement of company safety programs.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through safety meetings, new hire orientations, and ongoing communication.
- Encourage Good Catch/near miss reporting and identification of unsafe conditions.
- Maintain safety documentation, including training records, inspection reports, and regulatory documentation.
- Support emergency preparedness initiatives, including drills, evacuation procedures, and response planning.
Operational Support
- Participate in weekly Transportation meetings and provide safety updates and recommendations.
- Identify equipment safety concerns and coordinate reporting of repairs or maintenance needs.
- Ensure required PPE and safety supplies are available and properly maintained.
- Provide safety documentation and performance information to support driver evaluations and performance discussions.
- Collaborate with department leaders to improve safety performance across operations.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of fleet safety, transportation safety, or related safety experience.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
- Must be able to certify forklift operators, EPJ Operators.
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and fleet compliance requirements.
- OSHA knowledge and safety program experience required.
- Experience with telematics systems such as Samsara, or similar platforms preferred.
- Experience conducting investigations, audits, training, and safety inspections.
- Ability to analyze safety data and develop practical improvement solutions.
- Strong communication, coaching, documentation, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety/risk management systems.
Preferred Certifications:
- OSHA 30 Certification
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or similar safety credential
