Job Title: Senior Software Engineer
Location: Midtown, NYC
Work Model: Hybrid — 3 days/week in office
About the Role
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer for a client to join the engineering team and take ownership of production backend systems and data pipelines.
This is a high-ownership role with a clear path toward Lead Engineer within 3–6 months for the right person.
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and maintain production backend services and data pipelines.
- Develop serverless applications using Python, AWS Lambda, Step Functions, and related AWS services.
- Own backend systems end-to-end, from architecture and implementation through deployment and ongoing improvement.
- Make thoughtful architectural and technical decisions as the product and engineering organization scales.
- Work directly with customers to understand their workflows, clarify requirements, and turn those needs into shipped software.
- Use AI coding tools and agentic development workflows to improve development speed and productivity.
- Contribute to the frontend when needed, with an approximate 90% backend / 10% frontend split.
- Mentor junior engineers and help establish strong engineering practices.
- Collaborate closely with product and other teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Take increasing ownership and responsibility with the opportunity to progress into a Lead Engineer role.
What We’re Looking For Must-Haves
- 5+ years of backend software engineering experience.
- Experience as a founding engineer or early engineering hire at a B2B SaaS startup.
- Proven experience owning and delivering production backend systems end-to-end.
- Previous experience as a technical lead, mentor, or senior technical contributor.
- Advanced Python skills with significant production backend experience.
- Strong experience with AWS, particularly Lambda, Step Functions, and serverless architectures.
- Hands-on experience with AI coding tools and agentic development workflows.
- Product-minded approach with the ability and willingness to work directly with customers.
- Based in New York City and able to work from our Midtown office 3 days per week.
- US Citizen or Green Card holder.
Strong Signals
The following would be especially valuable:
- Was among the first ~10 employees at a seed or Series A startup.
- Experience working at an AI/ML startup or similarly high-velocity technical environment.
- Experience with data platforms, knowledge graphs, or complex data systems.
- Comfortable contributing to React applications when needed.
- Experience in the construction/AEC industry.
- BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or another STEM discipline.
Pay: $220,000.00 - $270,000.00 per year
