Position Summary
The Grant Writer is responsible for identifying, pursuing, and managing grant funding opportunities on behalf of Harrison County. This position researches funding sources, prepares and submits grant applications, and monitors awarded grants to ensure compliance with reporting and funding requirements. In addition to grant-related duties, this position provides general clerical and administrative support to the Board of County Commissioners' office and prepares regular reports to the Commissioners on grant activity and other assigned matters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Research, identify, and evaluate federal, state, local, and private grant opportunities relevant to County departments and priorities.
- Write, prepare, and submit clear, competitive, and compliant grant proposals and applications by required deadlines.
- Coordinate with County departments and outside agencies to gather information, budgets, and supporting documentation needed for grant applications.
- Track grant deadlines, submission requirements, and award notifications; maintain an organized calendar of funding opportunities.
- Monitor active grants for compliance with funding agency requirements, including budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
- Prepare regular written and verbal reports to the Board of County Commissioners summarizing grant status, funding activity, and outcomes.
- Maintain accurate and complete grant files and records in accordance with County recordkeeping and public records requirements.
- Perform general clerical and administrative duties for the Commissioners' office, including correspondence, filing, data entry, scheduling, and document preparation.
- Answer phones, greet visitors, and respond to public inquiries in a professional and courteous manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Board of County Commissioners.
Minimum Qualifications
- Prior experience in grant writing, grant administration, or a related field preferred.
- Prior clerical, administrative, or office support experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clearly, persuasively, and accurately under deadline pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general office equipment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines, projects, and reporting obligations simultaneously.
- Ability to research and interpret grant guidelines, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and professionalism when handling County and public records.
- Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate reports to the Board of County Commissioners.
- Valid driver's license
Working Conditions
Work is generally performed in a standard office environment within the Harrison County Courthouse or other County office facilities. May require occasional travel within the county or to training/conference sites. Regular attendance and availability during standard business hours is required, with occasional additional hours near grant deadlines or Commissioners' meetings.

Pay: $40,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
