About the Role
We're looking for a reliable, thoughtful, and emotionally attuned companion to support a delightful 30-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair and communicates verbally through word approximations and gestures (think charades — you'll get good at this fast!).
This role goes well beyond caregiving. It's about companionship, dignity, consistency, and yes — genuine fun. You'll spend four to five days a week with her (3 PM–11 PM), sharing in the rhythm of her life: trips to the market, Stretch Lab, a movie night, or dinner out with friends.
THIS IS AN AGENCY POSITION
Key Responsibilities
- Keeping her safe and comfortable in everything you do together
- Helping her communicate and be understood — you'll learn her cues and speak up for her when needed
- Creating opportunities for connection, conversation, and being part of the world around her
- Helping with meals — from shopping to cooking to feeding, making mealtime relaxed and enjoyable - for both of you.
- Supporting her with toileting and other personal care with dignity and respect
- Learning her Care Plan and Behavior Plan and following them consistently, so she always knows what to expect from you
- Keeping her personal and medical information private
- Showing up with patience, warmth, and genuine presence — this is about building real companionship, not just checking boxes
Required Qualifications
- Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record (no major violations in the past 3 years)
- Proof of current auto insurance
- Reliable personal vehicle for commuting to and from work — a wheelchair-accessible van is provided for use during working hours.
- Ability to pass a California-compliant background check, including fingerprinting
- Experience assisting with personal care tasks, including feeding and toileting
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written care and behavior plans
- Dependability, emotional maturity, and a genuine interest in connection and companionship
Physical Requirements
This role requires core strength in assisting with mobility-related tasks, occasionally pushing a wheelchair, assisting with transfers as trained, and supporting personal care activities.
Training & Support
Multi-day paid training will be provided on her support needs, care plan and behavior plan.
Required Questions
All candidates must provide written response to these five questions to be considered for this position.
- Tell us about a time you supported someone who communicated nonverbally, or in a way that was different from what you were used to. How did you figure out what they needed?
- This role includes helping with feeding and toileting. Are you comfortable with this kind of hands-on personal care? If so, what's helped you approach it in a way that feels dignified and respectful for the person you're caring for?
- Can you tell us about a time you had to stay calm during a stressful or emotional moment? What did you do, and how did it turn out?
- What does "companionship" mean to you in a role like this one?
- Is there anything about this role that gives you pause, or that you'd like more clarity on before moving forward?
