Design the electrical systems that keep healthcare buildings running.
GutVann Architecture and Consulting is an architecture and engineering firm in Monmouth/Ocean County, New Jersey. Our primary focus is healthcare — skilled nursing, post-acute, and senior care — alongside a steady commercial portfolio. We are a technical firm, not a design-only shop. The work is real, constrained, occupied-building engineering.
We are hiring a Senior Electrical Designer to independently produce power and building electrical systems design across that portfolio. This is a hands-on production role for someone confident enough to take a project from existing conditions all the way through complete construction documents with minimal oversight.
To be clear about what this is: this is building electrical design. You will produce drawing sets that get permitted and built. If your background is utility or transmission engineering, substation work, protection and coordination studies, industrial controls, or electronics and PCB design, this is a different discipline and not the role we're hiring for.
What you'll do
- Design power distribution systems for new and existing buildings — service entrances, feeders, panelboards, branch circuiting, load calculations, and power riser diagrams
- Design and coordinate emergency and standby power systems, including generator sizing, transfer switches, and emergency power tie-ins for healthcare facilities
- Produce lighting design and lighting power layouts as needed
- Develop complete electrical construction documents in Revit, coordinated with our HVAC/plumbing team and architectural staff
- Perform electrical load calculations and equipment sizing
- Coordinate electrical scope with mechanical, plumbing, and architectural work in constrained and occupied-facility conditions
- Respond to RFIs, review submittals, and support construction administration
- Grow into healthcare fire alarm design and low-voltage/structured wiring scope — training and support provided
What we're looking for
- 6+ years of electrical design experience in a consulting engineering or MEP firm environment
- Demonstrated ability to independently produce power distribution design for commercial and/or institutional buildings, from existing conditions through permit-ready construction documents
- Experience with generator and emergency power systems
- Working production proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD — you build the model and the sheets.
- Solid working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)
- The judgment to run projects independently and escalate only the genuinely complex issues
Nice to have, but not required
- Healthcare facility experience — skilled nursing, hospitals, or medical office
- Fire alarm design experience (NFPA 72)
- Familiarity with low-voltage and structured wiring systems
- Familiarity with NFPA 99 essential electrical systems and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code
