ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix Public Works Department, Solid Waste Division has an internship opportunity for a master level student, attending accredited college or university. The Intern is required to commit to a working schedule of up to 30 hours a week for up to one year.

The Public Works Department, Solid Waste Division, is seeking an intern to support a comprehensive research project focused on employee wellness. This internship offers an opportunity to apply academic training in research, organizational development, public administration, social work, or a related field within a large municipal department.

The intern will conduct research on the current state of employee wellness within the Solid Waste Division and evaluate available resources that support staff well being. Responsibilities include gathering data through interviews with employees and supervisors, analyzing findings, and developing recommendations to enhance wellness support across the organization. The intern will also create a practical guide for supervisors to use in assisting employees with wellness-related needs.

Responsibilities include:

Conduct qualitative and quantitative research on employee wellness.
Interview department staff and supervisors to assess wellness needs and current challenges.
Analyze collected data and identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
Develop recommendations and resource options to strengthen wellness support within the Solid Waste Division.
Produce a clear, user-friendly guide for supervisors that outlines tools, best practices, and wellness resources.
Prepare a final summary of findings and present results to department leadership.

SALARY

Pay Range: $20.42 per hour.

Pay Range Explanation:

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 038. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree with major course work in the professional area for which internship is considered, or current enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program related to the internship's professional area.
All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Enrolled in Masters Level Program (or has already obtained Masters degree) in the Professional area for which internship is considered.

Experience with:

Conducting qualitative and quantitative research and data analysis.
Collecting data, and writing reports.
Interviewing techniques and procedures.
Working with Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint).
Learning job-related information primarily through oral instruction, on-the-job training and observation.
