Position Purpose:
Provide one-on-one and group support for students learning English through Lane’s non-credit English as a Second Language program, including leading tutoring sessions focused on homework, providing individual coaching in pronunciation, facilitating multi-level conversation groups, visiting classes upon invitation from faculty, and otherwise assisting students as they learn.
Essential Functions:
- Works independently and as part of a team.
- Tutors students in specific ESL subject matter as recommended by program leads, curriculum, and faculty in the area.
- Mentors peer/student tutors as assigned.
- Assists students to work through assigned materials or self-instructional modules.
- Observes and diagnoses areas that are causing the student problems in their course assignments, work, or personal correspondence or communication.
- Models and practices written and spoken English with students at multiple levels of learning, from pre-literacy through fluency.
- Discusses problem areas with students and provides explanation, clarification, reference materials or examples.
- Reports needs and issues to the Academic and Tutoring team as needed.
- Problem solves and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards (training provided).
- Maintains confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
- Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
This position works with the Academic and Tutoring Services Coordinator team and reports to the Director of Academic & Tutoring Services.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
Work Safely. Work may require sitting for two (2) to three (3) hour periods, working in a variety of spaces (small conference spaces, large open spaces, etc.)
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of best practices in English as a Second Language/English Language Learning tutoring
- Skill in working with students at all levels of English fluency
- Ability to provide positive reinforcement and encourage students and/or tutors
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to adhere to a regular schedule with potential evening or weekend hours
- Clear oral and written communication skills
- Ability to send clear written email and electronic messages to students, colleagues, and community members
- Ability to work in person (not remotely) during all shifts
- Ability to maintain a patient, caring and respectful attitude with students
- Ability to work well with students of varied backgrounds and experiences
- Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes
