Job Summary
The Teaching Assistant supports classroom instruction and student learning under the supervision of the classroom teacher and/or intervention specialist. This role assists in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs), promoting independence, and maintaining a structured, nurturing learning environment for students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.
Duties
● Assist the classroom teacher in implementing daily lesson plans, activities, and behavior support strategies.
● Provide one-on-one or small-group academic and behavioral support to students as directed.
● Reinforce instructional and therapeutic goals outlined in students’ IEPs.
● Support students with self-care, mobility, and communication needs as required.
● Help manage classroom organization, including materials preparation and maintaining a safe, clean environment.
● Ride the bus for student pickup in the morning and the afternoon a minimum of one day per week.
● Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-classroom activities.
● Implement behavior intervention plans and de-escalation strategies under the direction of certified staff.
● Collect observational or progress data as requested by the teacher or intervention specialist.
● Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to promote student success.
● Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students, staff, and families.
Qualifications
● High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
● Prior experience working with children, particularly those with special needs, is highly preferred.
● Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and remain flexible in a dynamic school environment.
● Strong communication and teamwork skills.
● Crisis intervention training (or willingness to obtain).
● Must meet state/federal requirements for paraprofessional certification if applicable.
Physical Requirement:
● Ability to walk, run, squat, reach and stand for the majority of the day.
● Physical strength to use handle with care restraints on adult students through age 22.
● Ability to work one-to-one with students for an eight hour period.
● Physical strength to prevent injuries and altercations within the student population, including adult students through age 22.
Pay: $16.70 - $22.00 per hour
