Osprey Initiative is hiring multiple part-time Technician II positions in the Houston, TX area. This effort is part of a larger grant-funded project with the Galveston Bay Foundation to investigate methods to remove and reduce trash in our waterways.
Osprey Initiative is a grass-roots company bringing action-based solutions to restore and protect our natural environment. Houston, TX technicians will be responsible for assisting with a large, multi-year contract with the Galveston Bay Foundation. Field activities include monitoring and maintaining litter collection devices within area waterways. This is a hands-on field position and involves documenting, removing, and disposing of collected litter from the devices. It also requires recording all necessary data and communicating any challenges to the management team. This position also involves working with school-age children to explain litter reduction practices and train them on how to effectively maintain litter devices. Additionally, field technicians could be involved in other fieldwork in support of ongoing restoration work in the watershed. This position will be 90% outdoors, working in and around rivers and streams in a variety of weather conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be comfortable working with school groups and able to present material in an appropriate manner.
- Must be willing to undergo a background check.
- Must have their own reliable means of transportation and a valid drivers license.
- Organized with strong note-taking/data recording skills.
- Dependable with a strong sense of responsibility – Must be a self-starter.
- Attention to detail with strong oral and written communication skills.
- Comfortable working extended hours in an outdoor setting in adverse conditions.
- Comfortable encountering wildlife including insects and snakes.
- Comfortable working around the water and in canoes / boats.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and feel comfortable carrying heavy items.
- Must be able to work in a team environment with respect for coworkers, supervisors, and partners.
- Must be safety conscious and able to recognize risks and avoid hazards.
HIRING PREFERENCE
- Access to a pickup truck or SUV capable of pulling a single-axle trailer.
- Availability to respond to on-call maintenance events.
You may be asked to speak to civic and educational groups and participate in public awareness and volunteer-based litter removal programs. You will be an ambassador for Osprey Initiative in the field and must be able to conduct yourself professionally and interact with a variety of people.
Osprey Initiative will provide appropriate orientation, safety, and job training. Osprey Initiative will provide necessary personal protective equipment and gear prior to start of work. Our worksites are drug, smoking, and alcohol free. We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discrimination at our worksites.
Schedule is flexible; however, occasional on-call maintenance within 48 hours of rain events may be required. Additionally, coordination with the school groups may require some adaptability.
Compensation for this position starts at $15.00 and depends on previous experience.
