Job Overview
The Product Owner is responsible for end-to-end ownership of one or more of HDI's commercial insurance product lines. This role translates underwriting strategy, market needs, regulatory requirements, and operational constraints into clear and actionable product direction. The Product Owner partners closely with Underwriting, Actuarial, Market Compliance, Claims, Operations, and IT to ensure products are well-defined, implemented consistently, and maintained in a controlled and sustainable manner. This role is part of HDI's Product Development Center of Excellence (PD-COE), a centralized function established to strengthen product discipline, coordination, and scalability across the organization. Product Owners will have the opportunity to influence how product strategy, governance, and execution are coordinated across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own and maintain product requirements, priorities, and roadmap for assigned line(s) of business
- Translate underwriting strategy and market insight into clear product objectives and requirements
- Serve as a central point of coordination for product-related decisions
- Support new product development from concept through launch, including feasibility assessment and implementation readiness
- Manage ongoing product maintenance driven by underwriting needs, regulatory developments, bureau updates, claims experience, and operational considerations
- Ensure product intent is consistently reflected across policy forms, rates, rules, underwriting guidelines, and system configuration
- Partner with Underwriting, Actuarial, Market Compliance, Claims, Operations, and IT to ensure product changes are feasible, compliant, and executable
- Work with Actuarial and Underwriting to define pricing parameters and monitor adherence to approved approaches
- Coordinate timing and sequencing of product changes to minimize operational disruption and regulatory risk
- Provide clear product specifications to support filings, system configuration, and implementation
- Contribute to product-level reporting and dashboards, including volume, loss experience, underwriting trends, and operational impacts
- Identify and escalate emerging risks, issues, or improvement opportunities
- Participate in PD-COE governance processes, including intake and prioritization
- Act as a primary point of contact for product-related questions within assigned line(s)
- Support internal training, communication, and change management related to product updates
- We are seeking candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas: Commercial General Liability, Commercial Property, Commercial Auto, Workers, Compensation, Inland Marine, Umbrella / Excess Casualty, Surety, Trade Credit, Aviation
Qualifications and Experience:
- Required education: Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Finance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
- Required experience: 7+ years of commercial property and casualty insurance experience, including 3+ years in product management, underwriting, actuarial, product development, compliance, or a related discipline.
- Industry knowledge: Working knowledge of commercial P&C policy forms, rates, rules, underwriting guidelines, bureau materials, and applicable regulatory frameworks.
- Technical proficiency: Experience with product governance frameworks, policy administration systems, rating/configuration platforms, data analytics, reporting tools, or related implementation processes.
- Core competencies: Strategic thinking, stakeholder management, analytical problem solving, change leadership, project prioritization, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex product, regulatory, operational, and technical issues into clear business direction.
- Preferred credentials: CPCU, ARM, AU, relevant Agile/SAFe Product Owner certification, or similar insurance, risk management, product, or delivery credentials preferred.
Compensation and Benefits:
Base salary range for this position is $140,000–$160,000 plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on experience, education, and geographic location.
