Position Summary
The Pharmacy Tech is responsible for performing a variety of pharmacy related tasks under the supervision and direction of a licensed Pharmacist. Performs various clinical duties, fills prescriptions, prepares unit dose medications, and aids in inventory management, thereby acting as a valuable assistant to the Pharmacist and the Pharmacy department. Position requires a high level of customer service skills to establish and enhance positive relationships with patients, co-workers and others. Implements and abides by customer service standards and performs other related duties in a manner compliant with all state and federal laws and regulatory standards.
General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information, and pharmacy services.

Uses aseptic technique when preparing IV admixtures; processes discontinued IVs per protocol, credits IV items appropriately; wears appropriate PPE in the IV room; routinely documents cleaning of IV hood; maintains integrity of IV room.

Prepares reports; gathers and files completed narcotic sheets; enters orders into the computer; maintains patient charges and credits daily.

Confers with Pharmacist on questions or irregularities regarding orders or stock orders; initials all dispensing worksheets, fill lists and prescriptions; ensures orders are checked by Pharmacist before sending to nursing units; prepares and sends daily orders. Prioritizes workload on urgency of need; utilizes guidelines for use for automated dispensing cabinets.

Ensures the maintenance and proper operation of equipment and supplies; maintains security of controlled substances and disposal of hazardous waste per protocol.

Monitors inventory to determine stock needed and ensures use of stock before expiration date; obtains medications from other local suppliers as required; organizes and assists in annual inventory; receives and properly stores incoming deliveries of medications and supplies; follows perpetual inventory guidelines in narcotic room and immediately informs Pharmacist of discrepancies; surveys care units, crash carts and medication cabinets for proper storage, outdates and monitoring of controlled substances.

Segregates unusable medications; appropriately handles returned medications; fills & delivers cassettes, narcotics, cabinet stock and floor stock; packages and labels medications per protocol.

Performs all aspects of the position in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors; ensures hand-off communication of incomplete assignments to prevent interruption of continuity of care.

Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Professional Licensure/Certification Required
Certification/Licensure Requirements

Current IL Pharmacy Tech License Required

CPhT (certified pharmacy tech) Required within 1 year
Experience Requirements

Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population minimum 1 year Preferred

Pharmacy minimum 1 year Preferred
