Job Summary
TIRO is seeking an experienced Machinist to fabricate, repair, and modify precision parts and components using both CNC and manual machine tools. This is a hands-on skilled tradesperson who can read a drawing, set up the job, hold tight tolerances, and weld and assemble finished work with minimal supervision. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
● Set up and operate CNC machining centers and lathes — establish and adjust work offsets and tool offsets, and edit programs at the control to correct or change a part.
● Operate manual lathes and mills to turn, face, bore, and thread parts to specification.
● Machine precision components to bearing-fit tolerances (press and slip fits) and hold the dimensional tolerances called out on drawings.
● Perform specialized lathe work, including crowning rollers using a taper attachment and cutting keyways for transmission and drive shafts.
● Select, install, and change tooling appropriate to the material, the job, and the machine.
● Interpret blueprints, machine drawings, GD&T, and written specifications, working in both metric and imperial units.
● Inspect and verify work using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and other precision instruments.
● Weld and fabricate using MIG, TIG, and stick (SMAW) processes for repairs and assemblies.
● Perform mechanical assembly, including fastening to torque specifications.
● Determine correct feeds and speeds for a range of materials, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
● Maintain machines, tooling, and a clean, safe work area; follow all shop safety procedures and PPE requirements.
● Perform related duties as assigned.
● Need someone who can be dependable and arrive on time. Work schedule is 4x 10hr (Monday – Thursday)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
● Recognized machinist apprenticeship or trade program, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
● Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on machining experience across CNC and manual equipment.
● Demonstrated ability to independently: set CNC work and tool offsets; turn, face, and bore on a manual lathe; crown a roller using a taper attachment; cut a keyway; and machine to bearing-fit tolerances.
● Proven ability to read machine drawings and hold the stated tolerances.
● Welding proficiency in MIG, TIG, and stick (SMAW) processes.
● Ability to measure and inspect using standard precision instruments, in both metric and imperial units.
● Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
● Valid CA driver's license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
● Experience in a maintenance or fabrication shop.
● CNC programming experience — writing or extensively editing G-code beyond control-level edits.
● Current welding certification
● Experience machining a variety of materials and fabricating or repairing legacy / obsolete parts.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
● Ability to stand for extended periods and to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
● Work is performed in a shop / industrial environment with exposure to machinery, heat, noise, and metal chips; requires consistent use of PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.).
