If you've ever walked into a substation knowing the drawings weren't going to match reality, this is the kind of work you'll appreciate.
Instead of staying behind a desk, you'll combine engineering reviews with field investigations to help improve existing utility substations across Northern and Central California. You'll be the engineer who finds the discrepancies, verifies the equipment, and gives future capital projects the accurate documentation they depend on.
What you'll be doing You'll rotate between engineering reviews and field work throughout a large utility substation program, spending several weeks reviewing drawings before heading into the field to validate existing installations.
- Review protection & control drawing packages, one-lines, AC/DC schematics, relay wiring, panel layouts, and cable schedules.
- Evaluate existing protection schemes and identify documentation gaps.
- Develop field investigation plans with the engineering team.
- Visit operating substations to verify equipment, wiring, relay types, CT/PT configurations, and panel layouts.
- Produce redlines and engineering markups based on field observations.
- Coordinate findings with design teams to support future upgrades.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation while following utility safety standards.
What you get This contract opportunity runs through the end of 2026 and pays $80–90/hour. You'll work on a large, multi-phase utility engineering program with recurring cycles of remote engineering work followed by field investigations throughout Northern and Central California. It's an opportunity to work on a variety of existing substations instead of the same facility every day.
Who you are You're comfortable reading the details others miss. You have at least five years of utility Protection & Control engineering experience, understand transmission and distribution substations, and can confidently interpret one-lines, relay wiring, AC/DC schematics, and protection drawings. You enjoy solving problems where engineering meets the real world.
