The Hopkinton Center for the Arts is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced visual arts instructor to teach several of our core visual arts classes at the elementary level. Our core classes introduce young artists to a broad range of media, techniques, and skills in a sequenced, age-appropriate way. We are looking for a teacher who can bring both strong studio skills and a passion for working with kids.
Our youth visual arts classes run in the fall, winter, and spring semesters. Classes for this age group are typically 1-1.5 hours on weekday afternoons and on weekends. Additionally, we offer a full summer program that runs from June through August, with half-day and full-day teaching opportunities available.
Job Description:
- Teach weekly after-school visual arts classes for grades 2-3 and 4-5 on Mondays and Thursdays in the fall, with the potential to add more classes in future semesters.
- Deliver age-appropriate instruction with a core focus on drawing, painting, and sculpture (non-ceramic), while also introducing students to additional media such as printmaking, mixed media, collage, and more.
- Manage the classroom using positive, consistent behavior management strategies
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, learning styles, and skill levels.
- Prepare materials and maintain a safe and organized studio classroom
- Collaborate with fellow instructors and HCA staff as an active, supportive member of our visual arts teaching team
Job Requirements:
- Experience teaching visual arts to elementary school students (non-traditional experience welcome)
- Professional working experience as an artist, educator, or in a related creative field
- A strong portfolio demonstrating skill across multiple media
- Classroom management skills and a calm, positive presence with kids
- Reliability, flexibility, and a collaborative spirit
Hiring Process and Onboarding:
Candidates will be asked to:
- Submit a résumé, portfolio (or link to their website/social media page displaying their work)
- Prepare a sample lesson plan and teach a 30-minute demonstration lesson prior to hiring
- Attend paid training and meetings, including: shadowing classes, behavior management training sessions, and quarterly visual art department meetings.
Pay: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour
