Job Summary
Blue Sky Decks, a premier deck builder and general contractor in North Idaho/Eastern Washington specializing in high-quality residential exterior construction, is seeking an experienced Crew Lead / Field Superintendent.
This role requires strong structural-building knowledge, attention to detail, field leadership, client-facing professionalism, and the ability to keep projects moving without compromising quality.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can read plans, understand construction details, direct crews, oversee subcontractors, identify issues early, maintain clean jobsites, and ensure work is completed according to Blue Sky Decks’ standards.

Key ResponsibilitiesField Leadership
- Lead daily field operations on assigned deck and outdoor living projects.
- Direct in-house crews, subcontractors, and field support personnel.
- Set clear expectations for quality, safety, production, cleanliness, and site conduct.
- Keep crews focused, organized, and accountable throughout the day.
- Review the work plan before each phase begins to ensure everyone understands the scope, sequence, and standard.
- Identify labor, material, site condition, or sequencing issues early and communicate them proactively.
- Maintain a calm, professional, high-accountability jobsite culture.
- Lead by example through work ethic, craftsmanship, communication, and follow-through.
Build Standardization
- Help create, implement, and enforce the Blue Sky Decks build standard.
- Maintain standardized field methods for layout, footings, framing, flashing, blocking, fasteners, stairs, railings, decking, drainage, waterproofing, trim, and finish details.
- Ensure crews and subcontractors build according to company standards, not personal preference.
- Train field team members and subcontractors on required methods and expectations.
- Document everything. Use checklists, photos, and quality checkpoints to create consistency across projects.
- Identify recurring field issues and help improve company processes.
- Support the development of repeatable systems that allow Blue Sky Decks to grow without sacrificing quality.
Quality Control
- Inspect work daily for accuracy, craftsmanship, safety, and alignment with project specifications.
- Confirm that work matches approved drawings, scopes, materials, and company standards.
- Catch issues before they are covered, advanced, or turned into punch list items.
- Verify critical details before inspections, client walkthroughs, and project closeout.
- Hold crews and subcontractors accountable to the expected standard.
- Correct quality issues promptly and professionally.
- Ensure final work reflects the premium level of Blue Sky Decks.
Project Execution & Schedule Support
- Understand the project schedule and help keep work moving according to plan.
- Coordinate daily sequencing, crew needs, subcontractor timing, inspections, and material readiness.
- Communicate schedule risks before they become delays.
- Help prevent downtime caused by unclear plans, missing materials, poor sequencing, or incomplete decisions.
- Track daily progress and communicate what was completed, what is next, and what is needed.
- Work closely with project management, preconstruction, administration, and leadership to maintain project momentum.
Jobsite Organization & Safety
- Maintain clean, organized, safe, and professional jobsites.
- Ensure materials, tools, and equipment are staged properly.
- Protect the client’s property, landscaping, driveway, existing structures, and surrounding areas.
- Enforce safety expectations for employees, subcontractors, and visitors.
- Identify and correct unsafe conditions immediately.
- Maintain clear access, safe work areas, and professional end-of-day site conditions.
- Report incidents, property damage, safety issues, or near misses promptly.
Subcontractor Oversight
- Coordinate subcontractors on site and ensure they understand the scope, schedule, and quality expectations.
- Review subcontractor work for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with Blue Sky standards.
- Prevent subcontractors from making unauthorized scope, design, or field changes.
- Identify subcontractor performance issues and communicate them clearly to leadership.
- Provide feedback on subcontractor reliability, quality, cleanliness, safety, and professionalism.
- Maintain firm but respectful accountability with trade partners.
Client-Facing Communication
- Represent Blue Sky Decks professionally with homeowners, neighbors, inspectors, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Communicate clearly and calmly with clients while on site.
- Provide basic updates on daily progress and next steps when appropriate.
- Escalate scope changes, pricing questions, concerns, complaints, or sensitive issues to the appropriate project lead.
- Avoid guessing, overpromising, or making unauthorized commitments.
- Help clients feel confident that their project is being handled by a capable, professional team.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete daily jobsite updates using company systems.
- Upload clear photos documenting progress, hidden conditions, completed phases, issues, corrections, and final details.
- Track labor, subcontractor activity, materials, delays, inspections, and next steps.
- Flag potential change orders before extra work is performed.
- Document field conditions that may impact scope, cost, schedule, or quality.
- Support accurate communication between the field, office, preconstruction, and project management teams.
Punch List & Closeout
- Prevent punch list items through daily quality control.
- Identify, document, and complete punch list items quickly.
- Conduct final quality checks before client walkthroughs.
- Support project closeout with photos, notes, warranty details, leftover material status, and final documentation.
- Ensure the client’s final impression reflects the quality and professionalism of Blue Sky Decks.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum 5+ years of relevant construction, carpentry, deck building, remodeling, finish-work, or structural construction experience.
- Demonstrable knowledge of framing, layout, footings, stairs, railings, decking, flashing, hardware, and finish details.
- Proven ability to lead crews, subcontractors, or field teams.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, scopes, drawings, specifications, and technical details.
- Strong understanding of quality control, jobsite safety, and construction sequencing.
- Effective communicator with the ability to build trust with clients, crews, subcontractors, and internal team members.
- Ability to identify field issues early and communicate solutions clearly.
- High level of ownership, follow-through, and accountability.
- Willingness to use technology, photos, checklists, and project management software for jobsite documentation.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to perform physical jobsite work, including lifting, climbing, standing, working outdoors, and using tools as needed.
Preferred
- Experience building high-end residential construction.
- Experience managing subcontractors and/or in-house crews.
- Experience with composite decking, cable railing, waterproofing, drainage systems, deck covers, helical piers, or complex site conditions.
- Familiarity with project management or similar construction management software.
- Experience working on lakefront, hillside, custom, or technically complex residential projects.
- Experience training apprentices, helpers, carpenters, or subcontractors.
