Pay: flat fee per completed assignment (based on scope and complexity)
Company: Combined Loss Consulting
Location: Phoenix metropolitan area (Maricopa County and surrounding); field work + remote report writing
Position Type: Independent Contractor / Subcontract (per-assignment basis)
Position Description
Combined Loss Consulting is a loss consulting firm expanding its forensic engineering practice into Arizona. We are seeking an Arizona-registered Professional Engineer to serve as our engineer of record for residential storm damage assignments in the Phoenix metro area.
This is a steady, recurring flow of residential files — not one-off referrals. You will perform forensic evaluations of wind, hail, and related storm losses, form independent opinions on causation, damage extent, and repairability, and issue signed and sealed engineering reports. Our internal team handles intake, scheduling support, and structured field documentation (photos, measurements, diagrams) captured under your inspection protocol, so your time is concentrated on analysis and report production.
Your professional conclusions are yours alone. Compensation is a flat per-file fee that is never contingent on findings, opinions, or claim outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the designated principal registrant in responsible charge of the firm's Arizona engineering services.
- Conduct and/or direct site evaluations of storm-affected residential properties, with a primary focus on roofing systems common to the Phoenix market (asphalt shingle, concrete and clay tile, foam and other low-slope systems), building envelopes, and interior water intrusion.
- Establish and maintain the field inspection protocol used by supporting field personnel; critically review all field data relied upon in your analysis.
- Analyze site data, verified weather data (NOAA/NWS storm reports, hail swath data), manufacturer specifications, and applicable building codes (IRC and locally adopted amendments) to form independent opinions on causation and repairability.
- Prepare, sign, and seal forensic engineering reports, and respond to clarification or rebuttal requests on your files.
- Optional (separately compensated at an agreed hourly rate): appraisal support, conference calls with carriers or counsel, and expert testimony.
What You Bring to the Table
- Must-Have: Active Arizona Professional Engineer registration in good standing with the Arizona Board of Technical Registration (civil or structural branch preferred), with your Arizona seal on file — OR a current out-of-state PE license with an NCEES record and 3+ years of post-licensure experience, eligible for Arizona registration by endorsement, with AZ registration obtained before your first assignment.
- Must-Have: Demonstrable forensic experience with storm damage claims: wind and hail damage assessment, roof system evaluation, moisture intrusion, and causation methodology.
- Must-Have: Professional liability (E&O) insurance appropriate to forensic practice, plus general liability and auto coverage; certificates of insurance required before first assignment.
- Strongly Preferred: Experience authoring reports used in the insurance claim context (carrier reports, rebuttals, appraisal, litigation support) and familiarity with Xactimate-based scoping disputes.
- Strongly Preferred: Prior deposition or testimony experience.
- Exceptional report writing: clear, defensible, evidence-first analysis with precise citation of codes, manufacturer instructions, and industry standards.
- Strong organizational and turnaround-time discipline; ability to manage your own schedule and workload.
Structure & Compensation
- Flat Per-File Fee: A fixed fee for each completed residential assignment, invoiced by you and paid the following week. Complex or multi-structure files are priced up front before acceptance.
- Steady Volume: A consistent flow of Phoenix-metro residential assignments; you choose which assignments to accept.
- Never Contingent: Fees are never tied to findings, coverage decisions, or claim outcomes.
Why Join Us?
- Volume Without the Overhead: Skip the marketing, intake, and scheduling grind — a steady pipeline of files arrives ready for engineering analysis.
- Field Support: Trained field personnel document properties under your protocol, letting you focus your hours on the work only a PE can do.
- Respect for the Seal: We built this role around Arizona's responsible-charge requirements.
- Growth: As Arizona volume grows, so does your file flow.
