Margaret Smith Design Studios is looking for a talented and thoughtful Interior Designer to join our studio on a 1099 contract basis.
We are a boutique residential design studio creating highly considered, layered interiors that feel personal, collected, and timeless. We are looking for a designer who shares that approach and is excited to be part of a small, collaborative studio where every detail matters.
The Role
This position will work closely with the Principal Designer across all stages of residential projects, from early concepts and material development through documentation, procurement, and installation.
We are looking for someone with at least 4 years of professional interior design experience who can bring both creativity and organization to the role. You should have a strong eye, a natural curiosity about materials and furnishings, and the ability to take an idea and thoughtfully carry it through the many details required to make a project come together.
This is a hands-on role within a small studio, and the right person will be comfortable taking ownership, asking thoughtful questions, and knowing when to take initiative.
What You'll Do
- Develop and refine design concepts, palettes, and overall project direction
- Create mood boards, presentations, and visual materials that communicate the design story
- Research and source furniture, fabrics, lighting, plumbing, hardware, finishes, and decorative pieces
- Develop detailed selections and specifications
- Assist with space planning, elevations, and construction documentation
- Create and maintain finish schedules and project documentation
- Work with vendors, showrooms, fabricators, contractors, architects, and artisans
- Request and review pricing, samples, lead times, and product information
- Assist with purchasing, procurement, and project budgets
- Attend client meetings, showroom appointments, site visits, and installations
- Help coordinate the many moving pieces of a project and keep details moving forward
- Maintain organized project files and documentation
- Support the Principal Designer throughout the design process, from concept through installation
The Designer We're Looking For
- 4+ years of professional interior design experience
- High-end residential experience preferred
- A strong and developed design sensibility
- An appreciation for beautiful materials, craftsmanship, proportion, and detail
- Proficiency in AutoCAD
- Proficiency in SketchUp
- Proficiency in Excel & Google suite
- Experience with Studio Designer or similar software is a plus
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Comfortable working directly with vendors, trades, and clients
- Able to manage multiple projects and priorities
- Self-motivated, resourceful, and comfortable working independently
- A collaborative personality and willingness to contribute ideas
- A portfolio that demonstrates a thoughtful approach to residential interiors
A Little About the Studio
Margaret Smith Design Studios is a boutique residential design practice focused on creating interiors that are representative of our clients. We believe the best spaces are personal, layered, and built around the people who live in them.
Because we are a small studio, this role offers the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of the design process rather than being limited to one small piece of a project. You'll work closely with the Principal Designer and have the opportunity to see ideas evolve from the first sketch to the final installation.
We value good design, good communication, curiosity, reliability, and a great eye.
