JOB POSITION DESCRIPTION: Registered Nurse
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to patients receiving residential treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. The RN is responsible for medical assessments, medication administration, withdrawal monitoring, patient education, care coordination, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team to promote recovery and safe discharge planning.
Position Requirements/Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure in the state of VA.
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse Program
- Licensing as a Registered Nurse Required
- Valid nursing and CPR Certification required.
- Degree in nursing and licensing through VDHP.
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- CPR/BLS certification (ACLS preferred in some facilities).
- Experience in behavioral health, detoxification, addiction medicine, emergency nursing, or psychiatric nursing preferred.
- Knowledge of substance use disorders, withdrawal management, and trauma-informed care.
- Strong assessment, communication, and crisis intervention skills.
SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY TO POSITION
- Complete nursing assessments upon admission and throughout treatment.
- Monitor patients for signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug withdrawal using evidence-based assessment tools (e.g., CIWA-Ar, COWS) through direct assessments and chart analysis.
- Supervise and administer medications, including psychotropic medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders, as prescribed.
- Monitor vital signs and evaluate changes in physical and mental status, report and chart timely.
- Respond to medical emergencies and initiate appropriate interventions.
- Provide basic wound care, medication education, and general health education.
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record.
- Collaborate with administration, physicians, nurse practitioners, counselors, therapists, case managers, and behavioral health technicians for person centered care of each patient.
- Participate in treatment planning, multidisciplinary team meetings, and discharge planning.
- Maintain infection prevention standards and medication safety.
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards.
- Maintain confidentiality of client information and records.
- Communicate and problem solves via chain of command.
- Liaisons between the medical team, clinicians and administration.
- Able to recognize crisis situations and provide interventions based on training and experience.
- Participate in staff meetings as assigned and maintain acceptable overall attendance.
- Promote a favorable/ positive work atmosphere.
- Attend in-service and educational training as necessary.
- Conduct Waived testing and Breathalyzers as required with patients.
- Ability to monitor and observe self-administration of medication with patients.
- Provide training to and oversee medication aides.
- Coordinate physician orders and pharmaceutical inventory maintaining strong partnerships with pharmacy contacts.
- Perform venipuncture and collecting laboratory specimens and coordinate their transfer with appropriate laboratory, including monitoring for results and uploading to EMR system.
- Seek out learning experiences and incorporate new knowledge into practice.
- Maintain flexibility and adaptability to expected and unexpected changes in the work environment.
- Report personal symptoms of suspected illness or contagious diseases.
- Report incident occurrences in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Ability to monitor and observe self-administration of medication with patients.
