Pleasant Grove Child Development Center is a mission of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church of Charlotte, North Carolina. Our central purpose is to provide the children of our church and community with a strong Christian education in a loving and nurturing environment. Our goal is to help our students develop spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically. Our program is open to all children and staff regardless of racial or economic background.
Job Description:
Under general supervision, provide developmental care and supervision to children enrolled in the Child Development Center; implement curriculum set by the school and approved by the state for children; establish and maintain supportive relationships with children and parents; model appropriate child care practices; and perform related work as required.
Employment Standards

Work Environment:
Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting children or heavy items (up to 50lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing and walking. You must be able to work safely in an environment containing biological conditions which may be unhealthy or hazardous (such as body fluids and waste, germs, childhood diseases).
Ability to:
· Work hours spent in a classroom or child care center.
· Work a standard 40-hour work week
· Work overtime which may be necessary when planning and organizing curriculum, holding parent conferences, attending all mandatory staff meetings and required in-services
· Follow dress code set forth by the Weekday School
· Report any suspected abuse or neglect to any child to the Division of Child Development. This is the law.
· Abide by regulations and rules to prevent SIDS
· Report any concerns that may negatively impact the school or church
Knowledge Of:
Early childhood development and appropriate practices for infants, toddlers and young children; nurturing, care giving and education of young children; concepts of integrated curriculum development and implementation; principles of observation and assessment of young children; solid foundation in other aspects of child development; principles of parent communication and support.
Education Qualifications:
All child care center teachers must have earned the North Carolina Early Childhood Credential (NCECC) or its equivalent. Individuals must enroll within six months of being hired and will have 18 months from their date of hire to satisfy the NCECC or equivalency requirements.
12 hours or more of Early Childhood Education preferred plus Edu 119 or working towards. Associate Degree or higher in Early Childhood are recommended.
Floaters, Infants, and Toddlers must maintain a current SIDS certificate
A current and maintained CPR and First Aid certificate is the responsibility of all employees.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
(Duties provided but not limited to)
· Supervise the children at all times
· Abide by the policies and procedures set forth by Pleasant Grove Child Development Center
· Follow classroom schedule, activities, and procedures specific to each classroom
· Be actively involved with the children
· Maintain classroom areas in accordance to sanitation and health standards and licensing regulations at all times
· Work cooperatively with all staff members and administration
· Avoid all GOSSIP. Work with children, staff, and parents in a professional manner avoiding gossip at all times
· Fill out and turn in a weekly “sanitation checklist”
· Keep classroom staff as well as administrators and chef informed of any changes to allergies or parental preference information
· Avoid parental conflicts by communicating with administrators any questions or concerns
· Keep up with all annual renewal training required by the school and the state
· Inform administration of any equipment concerns or issues in the classroom
· Responsible to attend all required special events, mandatory staff meetings and other Weekday School functions
· Model respectful and appropriate behavior for the children
· Use soft tones NEVER yelling or screaming at the children or staff
· Abide by the positive discipline policy for all children
· Reward and promote positive, appropriate behavior by treating all children with dignity and respect.
· Actively seek to improve your job performance and professional skills.
· Ensure that classroom remains clean and organized
· Address parents’ questions and concerns
· Contact parents when a child is sick or an injury has occurred.
· Administer first aid as needed
· Implement proper discipline with children who are having challenging behavior
· Research best practices and new methods of educating young children
· Assist children in completing projects and activities in the classroom
· Supervise outdoor activities and promote safe play
· Maintain CPR, First Aid, and its SIDS certification as set forth by the state and center
· Maintain renewal training hours set forth by the state and center
· Bring all concerns to the administration following the center’s grievance policy
· Greet each child and parent as they arrive each day
· Talk and sing, interact with each child during routine care giving activities such as feeding, changing, etc.
· Wash hands according to sanitation and health standards and regulations
· Sanitize and disinfect surfaces with sanitizing and disinfectant solutions in accordance to sanitation and health standards and regulations
· Be available to parents for informal conversations regarding their child
· Carry out all activities as described with weekly lesson plans
· Maintain and document children’s activities, work samples, and continue to add to their developmental portfolios monthly
· Evaluate and record student progress as required by the center
· Use strategies to enhance student growth and teacher-child relationships
· Be knowledgeable in concepts of child growth, development, and behavioral characteristics
· Conduct family conferences with a presentation of the child’s overall development
· Build respectful relationships with all colleagues
· Be familiar with all emergency procedures and exits
· Report any suspicious activity to the front office immediately
· Complete incident reports for all injuries
· Maintain teacher/child ratios and supervision at all times. Absolutely no cell phone usage other than school emergencies. Cell phones are not be used for cameras.
· Embrace cultural diversity and endorse it in your classroom
· Provide a variety of methods for parents and families to be involved in the classroom
· Annually complete job self-evaluation
· Annually participate in an employee performance evaluation
· Complete any special projects assigned by the administration
· Infants and Toddlers use of basic sign language skills
· Adhere to all policies set forth by the personnel handbook
· Must participate and pass random drug testing
· Report to administration when the classroom is within ratio
· Report to administration when the classroom is predicted to be over ratio
Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
