Registered Nurse (RN) -- Juvenile Corrections
We are seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Registered Nurse (RN) to join our correctional healthcare team at a county facility in Malibu for Juvenile Health for a 16-week assignment. This assignment offers 40 hours weekly. Evening shifts are available.
This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care within a correctional facility, ensuring the health and safety of juveniles while adhering to all regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of correctional RN experience, preferably while working with juvenile populations.
Duties
- Conduct thorough patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and medical history documentation.
- Administer medications via injections, IV infusions, and other routes following aseptic techniques and safety protocols.
- Manage acute pain and chronic conditions, including wound suturing, ostomy care, and infection control measures.
- Perform diagnostic evaluations such as laboratory specimen collection/processing, radiology procedures like mammography or sonography when applicable.
- Coordinate discharge planning and case management for continuity of care post-release or transfer.
- Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with HIPAA regulations using EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in settings such as ICU, PICU, neonatal units, or outpatient clinics to deliver specialized care including pediatrics, geriatrics, behavioral health, or substance abuse treatment.
- Educate inmates on health coaching topics such as nutrition, chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension), and medication adherence.
- Ensure infection control protocols are strictly followed to prevent disease transmission within the correctional environment.
Skills
- At least one year of correctional RN experience and comfortable with working in a locked, forensic environment with frequent interactions with law enforcement
- Proven experience with EMR/EHR systems including Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, or eClinicalWorks.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, physiology, anatomy, and diagnostic evaluation techniques.
- Proficiency in performing advanced procedures such as IV insertion/venipuncture, catheterization (urinary or central lines), tube feeding management, and sterile processing.
- Ability to handle complex cases involving trauma medicine, acute pain management, infectious disease care (including COVID-19 protocols), and post-operative recovery.
- Experience working with diverse populations including individuals with developmental disabilities or dementia/cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease or memory care needs.
- Familiarity with specialty areas like hospice & palliative medicine, occupational health services (including workers' compensation law), dermatology procedures (e.g., dermal fillers), and esthetic laser treatments is a plus.
- Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to perform triage effectively in high-pressure situations.
- Strong communication skills for patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration. This position requires a current RN license valid in the state of employment along with the ability to pass background checks and drug screening tests. Prior experience in hospital medicine, emergency room settings, or correctional healthcare is highly desirable for success in this role.
