BanfieldBio is currently looking for an entomologist to join us for a 2-year USDA New World Screwworm Research Project. We are a small company that turns concepts into products to benefit global health and we are expanding our team. Over the last 10 years, we have received more NIH Small Business grants to develop novel vector control technologies for global health than any other company in the US.
We are now engaged in multiple research projects on mitigating threats from arthropods of medical and/or veterinary importance, including ticks, bed bugs, cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes. If you are an ambitious, practically-oriented, curious experimentalist, brimming with ideas, a bit of a technology nerd, and you admire and respect the capacity of insects and other arthropods to compete with mankind and you seek an unconventional outlet for your innovative nature, then this position may fill your requirements. The work involves both laboratory and field work; conducted alone, with our team, or with our collaborators at universities or government agencies. You will be expected to learn how to write effective grant proposals, work with collaborators to develop experimentally and statistically-sound experimental designs, complete field work and publish/present your findings. You will also gain real-world experience developing and protecting intellectual properties. You will be encouraged to develop your own projects and submit grant applications in support of those project, but you will not be required to find funds to support your position with us. This position is already fully funded for the duration of the project.
You will be mentored by two experienced researchers who have an established track record of grantsmanship, commercialization and publication. We will encourage and assist you to continue your career development, although a permanent position at the completion of the project may also be offered if it suits the candidate and the Company.
This position requires a recent Ph.D. in entomology, with a strong preference for studies in vector biology, ecology, pest management, vector-borne diseases, or veterinary entomology. We may consider an M.S. candidate with at least 2 years experience as a research biologist working on vector control or biology.
Specifically, the tasks in which the Entomologist may be engaged include the following:
- Contribute to the design and field testing of New World Screwworm traps.
- Conduct volatile collection of plant headspaces for lure development.
- Design and conduct laboratory and field experiments to establish proof of concept of new technology, as well as to determine the efficacy of novel techniques and products at various stages of development.
- Take a leadership role in selected projects and participate as a productive member of other projects.
- Coordinate experimental investigations being conducted by external collaborators.
- Write reports for internal use and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed and lay journals.
- Present results and information at scientific, professional and industrial meetings.
- Participate in writing and submission of patent applications.
- Propose and write research grant proposals and contribute to proposals developed by others in the company.
This is a full-time position at a salary of $60,000-$80,000, qualifications dependent.
