Maine Audubon is hiring a full-time, year-round Custodian and Facilities Assistant to join its dynamic team based in Falmouth, Maine. Since 1843, Maine Audubon has worked to conserve Maine wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people in education, conservation, and action.
Position Overview
We are seeking a full-time Custodian and Facilities Assistant (morning or evening) to clean and maintain interior spaces at Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm Center. The position will be based at our Gilsland Farm headquarters in Falmouth, Maine and will be responsible for interior cleaning and light maintenance of two small office buildings and two public-facing welcome centers. This position reports to the Facilities Manager, but will also frequently coordinate with other members of Maine Audubon’s Properties team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform daily cleaning, including vacuuming, dusting, and mopping, as well as removal of trash and recycling.
- Perform monthly maintenance, including buffing floors, cleaning signage, washing windows, and high dusting.
- Complete periodic maintenance, including interior painting.
- Assist with public event setup and takedown as needed during normally scheduled shift.
- Address minor maintenance issues, and identify and report larger problems.
- Diligently maintain records and logs of maintenance and cleaning tasks.
- Assist with winter snow removal, salting, and sanding during regularly scheduled shift.
- Maintain a safe work environment by properly handling, storing, and disposing of cleaning chemicals and other supplies.
Qualifications:
- Previous custodial experience preferred, but willing to train a candidate with a positive attitude and a strong desire to learn.
- Works effectively and respectfully with team members and customers from different backgrounds and cultures.
- Able to complete tasks quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly while working independently and with limited supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a high standard of cleanliness for our staff and the public who use our facilities.

Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions:
- Able to frequently lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds.
- Able to frequently walk, stand, squat, bend, and move during regular daily shifts.
- Comfort and experience with various, potentially loud tools, like vacuums, drills, etc.
- Able and willing to work from ladders and scissor lifts.
- This position requires the successful completion of a post-offer, pre-employment physical abilities test to ensure the candidate can safely perform the essential functions of the position.

Timing, Compensation, and Benefits:
- Full-time (40 hours/week), year-round position (willing to discuss part-time opportunities), set-schedule shift, not on-call.
- Part of the scheduled shift will occur outside of Maine Audubon’s 9 AM-5 PM normal operating hours. Either early morning or late evening weekday schedules are possible.
- Maine Audubon offers a full benefits package including an option for paid health insurance, a generous paid time off package, and employer contribution to retirement savings (after meeting eligibility requirements).
- Hourly range: $18-$20 hour
