Position Summary
Tax Group US is a tax resolution firm representing individuals and businesses before the Internal Revenue Service and state taxing authorities. We are seeking an experienced Tax Resolution Attorney to manage a caseload of clients facing federal and state tax collection, audit, and compliance matters.
The attorney will analyze each client’s financial and tax circumstances, develop practical resolution strategies, communicate with taxing authorities, and guide clients through every stage of the representation. The ideal candidate has strong negotiation skills, sound professional judgment, and the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent individuals and businesses before the IRS and state taxing authorities.
- Evaluate client tax liabilities, compliance history, financial records, and collection exposure.
- Develop and implement case strategies based on each client’s financial and legal circumstances.
- Prepare and negotiate offers in compromise, installment agreements, currently not collectible requests, penalty abatements, and other collection alternatives.
- Address wage garnishments, bank levies, federal tax liens, collection notices, and revenue officer matters.
- Assist clients with audits, appeals, innocent spouse claims, trust fund recovery penalty matters, and payroll tax liabilities.
- Communicate directly with IRS revenue officers, appeals officers, examiners, and state representatives.
- Prepare financial disclosure forms, correspondence, protests, appeals, and supporting documentation.
- Review IRS transcripts, tax returns, financial statements, and client records.
- Maintain accurate case notes, deadlines, documents, and client communications in the firm’s case management system.
- Provide clients with regular, clear, and professional case updates.
- Work with enrolled agents, case managers, tax preparers, and administrative staff to move cases toward resolution.
- Identify compliance issues and coordinate the filing of delinquent tax returns when necessary.
- Handle United States Tax Court matters when qualified and admitted to practice before the court.
- Follow applicable ethical rules, confidentiality requirements, and firm procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Active and unrestricted license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Eligibility to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
- 1 year of experience in tax controversy, tax resolution, collections, audits, or a related practice area.
- Working knowledge of IRS collection procedures and common tax resolution programs.
- Strong legal analysis, negotiation, writing, and client communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple cases, deadlines, and priorities.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and cloud-based case management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience handling offers in compromise, installment agreements, penalty abatements, liens, levies, payroll tax matters, and appeals.
- Admission to practice before the United States Tax Court.
- Experience communicating with IRS revenue officers and state taxing authorities.
- Licensed in California
Performance Expectations
The Tax Resolution Attorney is expected to maintain timely client communication, meet internal and government deadlines, document all material case activity, and pursue appropriate resolution strategies efficiently. Performance may be evaluated based on case progress, resolution quality, client satisfaction, compliance with firm procedures, and overall contribution to the legal team.
Work Schedule
The attorney must be available during standard business hours to communicate with clients, IRS personnel, state taxing authorities, and other members of the firm.
Pay: $107,443.66 - $129,394.52 per year
