Position Overview
The NAMI West Central Indiana is a safe place where someone can talk with a peer if they are experiencing a mental health crisis or overwhelmed by emotional stress. It is a zero-barrier-to-care peer support program, offering care to anyone over 18. NAMI provides crisis stabilization, peer support, resources, and referrals to those seeking support.
NAMI West Central is seeking a Peer Support Professional in Lafayette, Indiana. The Peer Support Professional will work to engage individuals in a mental health crisis providing de-escalation, peer support and connection to critical services.
Essential Functions:
- Respond to requests for crisis support by community partners or private citizens both at the stabilization unit and in the community where the crisis is occurring.
- Utilize current guest documentation system ensuring protocols for HIPAA compliance and control of personal identifying information are followed at all times.
- Follow all safety and crisis response policies, practices and protocols to ensure safety of clients and staff.
- Collaborate with community partners to assist guest in connecting to needed resources and supportive services.
- Utilize assessments and assist guests in the creation of Safety Plans as needed.
- Acknowledge lived experience and share aspects of personal recover story, as appropriate to support guest’s journey.
- Approach all interactions with guests, staff, volunteers and community partners from a respectful and non-judgmental perspective.
- Model effective coping techniques, healthy boundaries and self-care strategies.
- Participate in staff development opportunities, including workshops, trainings and certifications, both live and virtual
Qualifications
- Lived experience with mental illness and/or substance use disorders with one year of recovery complete.
- Peer Support Certification, or willingness and ability to obtain.
- Associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
- Understanding of the principles of trauma informed care and harm reduction.
- Ability to navigate stressful situations and changing priorities.
- Ability to regularly maintain a stationary position, traverse indoor and outdoor spaces, and observe and recognize signs of guests’ distress.
- Ability and willingness to work weekends as required by staffing need or training requirements.
- Reliable transportation, proof of valid driver’s license and full insurance coverage.
- Solid written and oral communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse populations and those experiencing distress.
- Strong organization and time management skills.
