Job Duties/responsibilities:
The Tooling Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and continuous improvement of tooling, fixtures, and equipment that support aerospace manufacturing operations, working out of the Moonshine fabrication shop. This role bridges engineering design and hands-on shop execution, translating process and production needs into manufacturable tooling solutions. The Tooling Engineer works closely with Moonshine Technicians, Process Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Production leadership to identify root causes of equipment, ergonomic, and quality issues, and to design innovative, cost-effective solutions that improve safety, ergonomics, quality, and production capacity. This position reports to the Moonshine Department Lead and will work in close partnership with them on day-to-day tooling design and shop support.
Essential Job Functions:
- Design tooling, fixtures, jigs, carts, racks, and equipment enhancements using SolidWorks to support facility and production equipment improvements identified through work requests.
- Partner with Process Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Moonshine Technicians to identify root causes of safety, ergonomic, quality, or capacity issues and translate them into engineered tooling solutions.
- Apply sound engineering design principles (tolerancing, GD&T, material selection, DFM/DFA, load and stress considerations) to ensure tooling designs are functional, durable, manufacturable, and cost-effective.
- Develop 2D drawings, 3D models, and bills of material (BOMs) sufficient for fabrication, procurement, and documentation control.
- Support prototyping and first-article builds, working directly with technicians in the fabrication shop to validate fit, function, and manufacturability of new designs, including collaborating on toolpath and machining strategy (MasterCAM) for tooling components run on Moonshine mills.
- Iterate on tooling designs based on shop floor feedback, testing results, and continuous improvement input from technicians and process engineers.
- Lead or support facility and equipment-related projects from concept through implementation, including scheduling, coordination with cross-functional stakeholders, and documentation.
- Evaluate existing tooling and fixtures for opportunities to improve safety, ergonomics, quality, or throughput, and drive redesigns as needed.
- Perform engineering calculations and analysis (e.g., basic stress/load analysis, tolerance stack-ups) to validate tooling design decisions.
- Create and maintain accurate engineering documentation, drawing packages, and revision control in accordance with company and aerospace quality standards (e.g., AS9100 practices).
- Collaborate with Quality Engineering to ensure tooling and fixtures support required inspection and measurement processes.
- Recognize and mitigate potential safety hazards associated with tooling designs, equipment, and job site conditions.
- Demonstrate understanding of, and ensure designs comply with, all EHS requirements and policies.
- Understand and support 5S requirements in tooling and workspace design.
- Use maintenance/engineering systems to track, disposition, and close assigned engineering tasks and work requests.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to technicians on the proper use, care, and troubleshooting of new or modified tooling.
- Maintain required training curriculum relevant to the role and shop environment.
- Must be a team player, able to take direction from engineering and production leadership, and able to work effectively alongside technicians in a hands-on shop environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods while performing CAD and design work, and frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands and reach with hands and arms while supporting prototyping, fit checks, and troubleshooting on the shop floor. May occasionally be required to bend, climb, and lift up to 55 lbs.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Tool Design, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, 2D drawing creation, and BOM generation
Proficiency in MasterCAM (or direct, hands-on equivalent experience) for generating and reviewing toolpaths for milling operations
Working knowledge of engineering design principles, including GD&T, tolerancing, and materials selection
Experience designing tooling, fixtures, or jigs for a manufacturing environment
Desirable Qualification
Experience in aerospace manufacturing or another highly regulated manufacturing environment (AS9100, ISO 9001, etc.)
Familiarity with machine shop processes (milling, turning, grinding) and welding/fabrication methods
Experience with basic FEA/simulation tools for tooling or fixture validation
Hands-on shop experience or familiarity with rigging, cranes/hoists, forklifts, and hand/power tools
Experience with PLM/PDM systems and engineering change processes
Lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement (Kaizen) experience
