Associate Field Service Technician – Builders, Problem Solvers - Global Travel
For the Mechanically Curious. The Builders. The Tinkerers.
South Bend, Indiana | Full Time | Global Travel
Do you spend your weekends rebuilding engines, welding projects in your garage, wiring up Arduino systems, restoring vehicles, flying drones, fabricating parts, 3D printing, or taking things apart just to understand how they work? Do you know a little about PLC?
If that sounds like you, keep reading.
At MTI, we have found that some of our best Field Service Technicians did not start their careers as seasoned service professionals. They started as curious people who loved solving mechanical and technical problems. They are the people everyone calls when something breaks. They enjoy troubleshooting more than most people enjoy watching television.
As a Field Service Technician, you'll travel throughout the United States and around the world installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and servicing advanced welding and manufacturing systems used by some of the most respected companies on the planet. One week you may be helping launch equipment at an aerospace manufacturer, the next you may be solving a complex automation challenge halfway around the world.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone with 2-5 years of hands-on technical experience who wants to accelerate their career, see the world, and work with technology that most people never get the chance to touch.
Who Thrives Here?
The people who succeed at MTI often have backgrounds or hobbies such as:
- Automotive restoration and engine rebuilding
- Welding and fabrication
- Robotics clubs or competitions
- Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and electronics projects
- PLC programming and industrial automation
- CNC machining
- RC vehicles, drones, and mechatronics
- Electrical troubleshooting
- HVAC, maintenance, millwright, or industrial technician work
- Military technical occupations
- Manufacturing equipment maintenance
- Basic understanding of PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
If you enjoy figuring out why something isn't working and refuse to quit until you've solved it, you'll fit right in.
What You'll Be Doing
- Travel throughout North America and internationally to install and support MTI's industry-leading welding systems
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and automation systems
- Commission new equipment and train customer personnel
- Read electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical documentation
- Work directly with engineers, operators, maintenance teams, and plant leadership
- Represent MTI at customer sites around the world
- Continuously develop your technical skills through hands-on training and mentorship
What We're Looking For
You do not need to know everything. We can teach the specifics.
What matters most is that you already have a strong technical foundation and a passion for learning.
Preferred qualifications include:
- 2-5 years of experience in manufacturing, maintenance, field service, automation, controls, electrical, mechanical, military technical roles, or related fields
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
- Experience with electrical controls, sensors, motors, drives, hydraulics, pneumatics, robotics, or PLCs
- Familiarity with Allen-Bradley or Siemens controls is a plus
- Strong communication skills and customer-facing professionalism
- Valid passport or ability to obtain one
- Willingness to travel up to 75%, including significant international travel
Why This Job Is Different
Most field service jobs have you supporting the same equipment in the same region.
At MTI, you'll:
- Travel the world
- Work with cutting-edge manufacturing technology
- Solve unique technical challenges
- Receive extensive training from industry experts
- Earn additional compensation through travel bonuses
- Build skills that can lead to advanced technical, engineering, management, or global support roles
