Systems Engineer for Biological/Biomedical Instrumentation Development
Location: Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University and Ithaca College, in the beautiful Finger Lakes wine region.
Job Type: Full-time. On site.
About the Role:
Are you a versatile engineer who loves bringing complex automated systems to life? Are you looking for a scientifically and technically challenging research and development position with large real-world impacts?
MiTeGen has been providing innovative solutions for X-ray and electron-based diffraction and imaging and for biomolecular and pharmaceutical R&D since 2004. Our products are used in academic, government, and industrial laboratories in more than 40 countries and on the International Space Station.
We are looking for talented innovators to join our team and to focus on design and commercial development of instruments and tools as we continue to expand our capabilities and market reach into biological, biomedical and agricultural applications.
As an Instrumentation Development and Systems Engineer, you will bridge the gap between hardware, software, and science. If you have a "maker" mindset and thrive on seeing your code drive physical machinery, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design: Conceptualize mechatronic/robotic frameworks and create precise 3D models using CAD software.
- Embedded Engineering: Design complete embedded systems, including schematic capture, custom PCB layout, and writing the underlying firmware.
- Programming: Write control algorithms and software utilizing C++, Python, and ROS.
- Integration: Connect sensors, actuators, and controllers so machines perceive and act accurately.
- Testing: Run physics simulations and physical tests to debug and optimize performance.
- Maintenance: Troubleshoot system errors and perform routine upgrades.
- Collaboration: Work alongside cross-functional teams to integrate software with mechanical systems.
Job Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science. Candidates with 2-year degrees and exceptional experience will also be considered
- Coding: Proficiency in C++ and Python.
- Frameworks: Hands-on experience with Robot Operating System (ROS / ROS2).
- Hardware: Strong understanding of microcontrollers, actuators, and sensor integration.
- Math: Solid foundation in kinematics, dynamics, and linear algebra.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Full-Stack Embedded Design: Proven ability to design embedded systems from scratch, encompassing both hardware (circuitry/layout) and firmware (coding).
- Mechanical & CAD Design: Strong mechanical design experience with a preference for SolidWorks.
- Electronics: Hands-on experience with schematic capture and board layout.
- Motion Control: Direct experience configuring and tuning motor controllers.
- Experience: 2+ years of industry experience developing autonomous systems.
- AI & Tools: Knowledge of computer vision frameworks (OpenCV), machine learning libraries, or simulation tools like Gazebo, Webots, and MATLAB/Simulink.
- Leadership: Interest and accomplished experience in leading small teams.
- Solutions Engineering: Partner with customers to identify needs and innovate solutions.
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Above band salary possible for exceptionally qualified individuals.
- Company sponsored 401(k)
- A fully equipped engineering workshop and collaborative laboratory environment.
- The opportunity to work on highly impactful technology with a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.
How to Apply:
Please submit your resume along with a portfolio or brief description highlighting a specific mechatronic/robotic system you have designed, programmed, and integrated from the ground up.
