River City Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (RCOMS) is hiring a full-time surgical assistant.

Dr. Haverkorn, a board-certified oral surgeon, founded RCOMS in 2018 with the idea that all patients should pay the same amount for the same type of surgery. RCOMS is out of network with all insurances. Patients pay us directly. Patients with insurance can file a claim with their insurance.
We are kind to patients, spend time with patients, and give patients honest advice, even if the advice doesn’t help us.
Dr. Haverkorn has full hospital privileges and will treat most anyone and anything within the world of oral and maxillofacial surgery. We have no age limits on our patients and routinely treat medically compromised patients. We are heavy into dental implant surgery and extractions. We treat severe infections, traumas, orthognathic surgery, and pathology patients.
Requirements: All employees must be flexible, understanding we are a small company and may need employees to help with any task. We hire intelligent, self-motivated folks who can look around, see what needs to be done, and do it without constant guidance and direction. We will train you and provide written policies and procedures to help you.
Candidates must hold a valid Texas RDA (Registered Dental Assistant) certificate. Experience assisting an oral surgeon is preferred. All RCOMS employees must hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers card (aka CPR card). The ability to fluently speak and write Spanish is a plus but not required. After hiring, surgical assistants must take basic classes in HIPAA, Blood Borne Pathogens, OSHA regulations, infection control, emergency procedures, and other topics and pass written tests before they can work with patients.
Job Description: Each level of surgical assistant at RCOMS has defined requirements. Inexperienced hires will start as instruments techs at the lower end of the pay scale. In general, all assistants must learn and embrace the RCOMS approach to patients, including learning our fee schedule, and perform basic job functions like arriving on time, being a team player, being helpful, and being kind.
Assistants must greet and seat patients, take vital signs, make x-rays (primarily digital panorex x-rays), understand the basic functions of the anesthesia patient monitor, give pre- and post-operative instructions, assist with all type so of oral and maxillofacial surgeries and procedure, and check on patients after surgery.
Assistants must maintain various logs, be familiar with our crash cart, learn and be comfortable with dental implants in general and Straumann, Neodent, and NobelBiocare implant systems specifically, call-in authorized prescriptions, take clinical photos, and complete basic documentation. Assistants interact with and order from vendors.
Assistants must be familiar with basic front office skills such as answering the phone and scheduling patients, printing and scanning documents, entering patients in our computer system, and using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Pay: Hiring level and pay are commiserated with experience. Starting pay for an employee with no experience is $12/hr. At the highest level, surgical assistants can make $25+/hr. RCOMS has well-defined paths to advancement within the company. Employees may advance at any time assuming they complete goals and do the basics well.
Hours: Our standard hours for assistants are Monday through Thursday, 7:30am to 3:30pm. We do start early (6:30am or earlier) every other Tuesday and we do stay late some days. Fridays assistants arrive at 6:30am and work until surgery is done, typically about 2pm. Employees are expected to stay until the end of the day or until the last patient leaves and closing tasks are completed, whichever is later.

Location: Our only office is at 5418 North Loop 1604 West, suite 101, San Antonio, across 1604 from Top Golf. We do occasionally perform surgeries at a surgery center near Blanco and Loop 410. Assistants must have reliable transportation.
