Job Description:
We are looking for a reliable, practical leader to help open a new commercial packing and shipping franchise in the Hillsborough, NC area. If you enjoy variety in your workday and know your way around a warehouse, you are a great candidate.
In the beginning, you will help us physically set up the shop from scratch—doing things like putting up heavy racking and getting our initial equipment ordered. Once we are open, you will lead the backroom crew, build custom crates, drive the truck for customer pickups, and make sure everything leaving our facility is packed tight and safe. You will also keep our computer tracking systems up to date and make sure our clients get answers to their shipping questions fast.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Getting the Warehouse Ready (Start-Up)
- Facility Set-Up: Help paint the layout, assemble shop furniture, and anchor our heavy pallet racking securely to the concrete floor according to safety rules.
- Buying Gear & Supplies: Reach out to local and national vendors, compare prices, order our initial tools and packaging inventory, and handle the tracking of those orders.
- Setting Up the Floor: Lay out our physical staging zones and set up our daily tracking clipboards and visual job boards exactly by the book.
Daily Operations & Maintenance
- Shop Upkeep: Keep the entire warehouse swept, mopped, organized, and running efficiently.
- Inventory Control: Keep a close eye on our packing supplies, order more before we run out, and track expenses so we don't waste money.
- Fleet Care: Make sure our pickup truck stays clean inside and out, stays gassed up, and gets its scheduled oil changes and maintenance.
- Safety First: Act as the shop safety lead, making sure everyone wears their gear, nail guns stay oiled, and the forklift is parked with its forks flat on the floor.
Packing, Shipping, Tracking & Team Leadership
- Customer Inquiries & Pickups: Drive to local businesses or homes to collect their items. Answer customer phone calls and questions clearly, and handle overflow inquiries to keep our client service levels high.
- Onsite Estimating: Fill out pickup paperwork, inspect items for existing scratches, and update the final price with the office if a job ends up bigger than estimated.
- Crating & Packing: Figure out the best way to pack fragile, heavy, or weirdly shaped items (like artwork, machinery, or electronics). Build the custom wooden crates, boxes, or pallets yourself and double-check your team's work so nothing breaks in transit.
- Carrier Sourcing & Tracking: Work with approved freight lines and parcel carriers to schedule daily shipments, fill out Bills of Lading, print out shipping labels, and track customer freight until it arrives safely at its destination.
- Data & System Entry: Use our ABConnect software to log pickup updates, system data, and customer info so our automated tracking keeps clients in the loop.
- Managing the Crew: Hire, train, and schedule our Warehouse Associates so the floor runs smoothly. Work daily with Sales to prioritize which jobs need to be packed and shipped first.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Experience: Background working in a warehouse, shipping department, or any hands-on technical/mechanical job where you use your hands and tools daily.
- Leadership: Experience overseeing a small team, scheduling shifts, and keeping people on track.
- Tech Skills: Comfortable using a computer, working with internet tools, and logging shipment specs into tracking software.
- Physical Strength: Must be able to lift 150 pounds unassisted and handle a physical, active workday on a concrete floor.
- Clean Driving Record: Valid driver's license with a totally clean record (no reckless driving, drug, or alcohol violations). You must be clear to drive our company trucks.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. A college degree is preferred, but solid, real-world operations experience matters most.
