Position Title: Kitchen Team Member
Reports to: Kitchen Director and/or designated Kitchen Supervisor Kitchen Help supports the kitchen team with food preparation, meal service, dishwashing, cleaning, sanitation, stocking, and other day-to-day kitchen tasks.
Position Summary:
This position works as part of the kitchen team under the direction of the Kitchen Director or designated supervisor. The Kitchen Help position is not a supervisory role and does not have responsibility for directing or managing other employees. The goal of this position is to help the kitchen operate safely, efficiently, and hospitably so that campers, retreat guests, staff, and community members receive quality meals and a welcoming experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with daily food preparation according to menus, recipes, production plans, and instructions from the Kitchen Director or designated supervisor.
- Perform basic food-preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, cutting, portioning, mixing, measuring, assembling, and storing ingredients.
- Assist with cooking and meal service as directed, including plating, serving, replenishing food, and maintaining an organized service area. Follow recipes, portion guidelines, food-preparation instructions, and established kitchen procedures.
- Assist with opening and closing kitchen duties, including preparation, cleaning, sanitizing, dishwashing, stocking, and organizing work areas. Wash, sanitize, and properly store dishes, cookware, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
- Maintain clean and sanitary workstations throughout the shift and clean up promptly after completing assigned tasks. Follow all food-safety, sanitation, allergen-awareness, and safe food-handling procedures.
- Follow required food-temperature, labeling, dating, storage, and food-rotation procedures as directed.
- Assist with receiving, putting away, organizing, and rotating food and kitchen supplies as assigned. Help keep refrigerators, freezers, dry storage, prep areas, service areas, and other kitchen spaces clean and organized.
- Assist with trash and recycling throughout the shift and dispose of waste properly in designated SDR receptacles. Provide friendly, respectful, and welcoming service to campers, retreat guests, staff, volunteers, and community members.
- Work cooperatively with other kitchen and service staff and communicate respectfully with coworkers and supervisors. Assist with special meals, retreat events, camp programs, dietary accommodations, and menu changes as assigned. Ask questions when instructions are unclear and communicate when an assigned task is complete or additional assistance is needed.
- Perform other kitchen-related duties as assigned by the Kitchen Director or designated supervisor.

- Commercial knives and smallwares Commercial ranges, ovens, grills, hoods, and other cooking equipment
- Propane BBQ and outdoor cooking equipment Blenders, food processors, mixers, and other food-preparation equipment
- Commercial warewashing and sanitation equipment Cleaning equipment and supplies, including mops and sanitation tools
- Golf cart and other SDR operational equipment as assigned
- Google Calendar, Google Drive, email, and other systems used for scheduling and kitchen communication, as applicable
QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous kitchen, food-service, restaurant, catering, camp, retreat, or similar experience is preferred but not necessarily required.
- Basic knowledge of food preparation and kitchen sanitation practices.
- Ability and willingness to learn established recipes, procedures, food-safety practices, and kitchen routines.
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions and complete assigned tasks accurately. Strong teamwork, reliability, punctuality, and respectful communication.
- Ability to work effectively with people of different ages, backgrounds, identities, abilities, and experience levels.
- Ability to read and understand English sufficiently to follow recipes, labels, schedules, safety instructions, and workplace communications.
ServSafe or equivalent food-safety certification may be required or may be obtained as directed by the employer. CPR / First Aid / AED certification may be required or may be obtained as directed by the employer. Required certifications: When required by the position, certifications are provided at the expense of the Employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds independently and up to 60 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, including shifts of up to 10 hours.
- Ability to work for approximately two hours at a time without sitting, depending on operational needs.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, pull, and maneuver food, equipment, dishes, trays, and supplies.
- Ability to perform repetitive kitchen tasks, including chopping, stirring, reaching, bending, lifting, carrying, dishwashing, cleaning, and moving between workstations.
- Ability to work in a commercial kitchen environment with heat, steam, noise, cleaning chemicals, outdoor conditions, and variable temperatures.
