Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Staff Attorney to join our esteemed legal team within the MELS Matrimonial Unit. Matrimonial Unit Staff Attorneys are part of a team of lawyers, legal assistants and social workers who represent clients in divorce and separation actions in any of the five boroughs and parts of Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Responsibilities
- Under the direction of Supervising Attorneys, all Staff Attorneys have direct responsibility for all legal components of cases assigned to them from the initial intake to the conclusion of the matter.
- Staff Attorneys are expected to adhere to prescribed systems of substantive case handling and office procedures and to keep strict records of all activities, including accurate time records.
- Draft precise legal documents including pleadings, motions, briefs, contracts, and settlement agreements with clarity and professionalism.
- Negotiate favorable settlements on behalf of clients through active advocacy and strategic negotiation techniques.
- Represent clients in court proceedings and mediations with confidence and professionalism.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the NY State Bar is required
- MELS will expect each Staff Attorney to make a commitment of at least two years to MELS
- Two years' experience preferred after admission to the New York Bar
- Bi-lingual Spanish language speakers encouraged to apply
- Ability to work with co-workers in a professional and non-confrontational manner
Pay: $73,270.00 - $104,637.00 per year

Work Location: In person
