Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide classroom opportunities for students to explore their interests and values in post-secondary educational and career opportunities.

Encourage and support teachers in their efforts to infuse career development activities into the curriculum of their respective discipline.

Provide students with information regarding their credit status as they proceed toward graduation and assist them on an individual basis for schedule adjustment as needed.

Counsel with students on an individual basis at the secondary level which will best suit their future post-secondary needs.

Administer standardized tests as indicated by district policy and interpret the results to parents and students.

Counsel with students on an individual and/or small group basis regarding personal, emotional, social and academic concerns.

Consult with parents regarding their student's academic progress, school adjustment, and secondary and post-secondary plans.

Participate in building and community activities which will help foster a positive learning environment for all students.

Participate in professional growth activities which will help give students the most up-to-date information regarding post-high school career opportunities, and community resources.

Participate in district committees which address the educational needs of students.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Specific Responsibilities:

Counselors help students in a variety of ways, both directly and indirectly. Their assistance may be educational, personal-social, or career oriented; it may be part of the guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, system support or, in many cases, a blend of those factors.

Provide opportunities for students to learn about educational options at the secondary level and assist them in the registration process.

Manage the guidance program, including directing curriculum, managing secretarial staff, the budget, records, and creating print communications to be sent to all households in the district.

Engage in research as needs indicate: follow-up on graduates, etc.

Consult with teachers/staff regarding students' individual learning needs. Initiate and/or follow up referrals to social workers, at-risk counselor, chemical awareness coordinator, building team and community resources as needed.

Demonstrated ability to operate a computer, software and necessary technology.

Ability to develop effective and positive working relationships with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.

Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
