Position Overview
Zion Lutheran Church is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Part-Time Facilities and Custodial Assistant to help maintain clean, orderly, and welcoming spaces for our congregation, staff, visitors, and community partners.
This position is responsible for routine cleaning and custodial care throughout the church’s buildings, including worship spaces, offices, meeting rooms, kitchen, fellowship areas, restrooms, and other shared spaces. The Facilities and Custodial Assistant will also help prepare rooms for church activities and report supply, maintenance, repair, and safety concerns to church leadership.
The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, can manage responsibilities independently, and understands the importance of maintaining a clean and welcoming environment.
Schedule and Compensation
This is a part-time position requiring approximately 10–15 hours per week.
During the first 90 days, hours will be scheduled primarily on Thursdays and Fridays at a starting rate of $22.50 per hour.
Following successful completion of the 90-day introductory period and a satisfactory performance evaluation, the hourly rate will increase to $25.00 per hour. The employee will also transition to expanded shared-scheduling parameters based on the needs of the church.
Some schedule flexibility may be needed to support special services, weddings, memorial services, Family Promise, and other church or community activities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform routine cleaning and sanitizing throughout church facilities.
- Clean and maintain restrooms, kitchens, worship spaces, offices, meeting rooms, fellowship areas, and common spaces.
- Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, and spot-clean floors and surfaces.
- Empty trash and recycling containers.
- Clean entry doors, glass, fixtures, and frequently touched surfaces.
- Refill soap, paper products, and other custodial supplies.
- Assist with setting up tables and chairs for Sunday activities and special events.
- Monitor cleaning supplies and notify the Parish Administrator when additional supplies are needed.
- Observe and report maintenance concerns, unusual odors, equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, property damage, and needed repairs.
- Provide additional cleaning or facility support for special services and events as needed.
- Properly store cleaning equipment and supplies and follow established safety procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Pastor or Parish Administrator.
Qualifications
- Previous custodial, housekeeping, janitorial, or commercial cleaning experience is preferred but not required.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent work schedule.
- Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, sanitation, and detail.
- Ability to work independently and complete assigned responsibilities with limited supervision.
- Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to recognize and report maintenance, safety, supply, and repair concerns.
- Respectful and professional when interacting with church staff, congregation members, volunteers, visitors, and community groups.
- Ability to exercise appropriate discretion while working in church offices and ministry spaces.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to perform the essential responsibilities of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. The role regularly requires:
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing stairs.
- Pushing and pulling cleaning equipment.
- Moving and arranging tables and chairs.
- Lifting and carrying cleaning supplies, trash bags, paper products, and other custodial materials.
- Safely operating vacuums, mops, and standard custodial equipment.
- Working with approved cleaning and sanitizing products.
Work Environment
The Facilities and Custodial Assistant will work throughout the Zion Lutheran Church campus. Some work may take place while staff, congregation members, children, families, volunteers, visitors, or community groups are present.
The position may involve exposure to cleaning products, dust, trash, spills, and other conditions commonly associated with custodial work.
