Position Summary
A family is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and physically capable Nurse's Aide or Personal Care Assistant to provide one-on-one support for their child during the school day while recovering from orthopedic surgery. The student has an external fixator and will require mobility assistance, safe transfers, and supervision throughout the school day. This is a temporary position anticipated to run from approximately August through October, depending on the student's recovery.
The aide will work collaboratively with school staff while remaining an employee of the family.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one assistance to the student throughout the school day.
- Safely transport the student in a wheelchair between classrooms, lunch, recess, specials, and other school activities.
- Assist with opening doors and navigating school hallways and campus pathways.
- Assist the student with safe transfers to and from the restroom, classroom seating, and other necessary locations.
- Provide assistance with clothing management during toileting while respecting the student's dignity and privacy.
- Maintain continuous awareness during all transfers to protect the student's external fixator from accidental bumps or injury.
- Follow all physician-directed weight-bearing restrictions and mobility precautions.
- Implement fall prevention strategies and provide physical support as needed.
- Encourage the student's independence whenever it is safe and appropriate.
- Communicate appropriately with the school nurse, administration, teachers, and the student's parents regarding concerns related to safety or mobility.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding the student's medical information.
- Attend any necessary training provided by the family or medical professionals regarding the student's specific mobility needs.
This Position Does Not Include
- Medication administration.
- Wound care or dressing changes.
- Medical treatments or nursing procedures.
- Academic instruction or tutoring.
- Behavior management unrelated to student safety.
Qualifications
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA), Medical Assistant, Personal Care Assistant, or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience assisting individuals with mobility limitations, orthopedic injuries, or wheelchairs is highly preferred.
- Ability to safely assist with transfers and provide physical support throughout the school day.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
- Ability to pass all school-required background checks and Safe Environment requirements prior to beginning work.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to push and maneuver a wheelchair throughout the school campus.
- Ability to assist with standing, pivoting, and transferring the student safely.
- Ability to lift, support, and stabilize the student during transfers as needed.
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods throughout the school day.
Schedule
- School days during regular school hours.
- Temporary assignment anticipated from approximately August through October, or until the student no longer requires one-on-one mobility assistance.
Employment Information
This position is employed, supervised, and compensated directly by the student's family. The individual selected will work on the school campus and collaborate with school personnel to support the student's safe participation in the educational environment while following all applicable school policies and procedures.
Pay: $18.00 - $28.52 per hour
