Job Overview
A Corrections Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides essential nursing care for night shifts (Thurs-Sat) within a correctional facility under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical provider. This role supports the physical and mental health needs of the inmate population while maintaining safety, professionalism, and compliance with facility protocols. LPNs play a critical role in delivering hands-on patient care in a structured, secure environment.
Schedule Options:
- 36 hours/week (3x12 shifts) - Nights (Blocked Schedule)
Job Duties
- Patient Care & Monitoring: Provide routine nursing care including vital signs, patient observations, and ongoing health monitoring of inmates.
- Medication Administration: Administer medications and injections as prescribed and monitor for side effects or adverse reactions.
- Treatment Support: Perform wound care, catheter care, venipuncture, glucose monitoring, diabetic care, and other general nursing duties within LPN scope of practice.
- Emergency Response: Assist in medical emergencies by providing first aid, CPR, and emergency nursing support until advanced care is available.
- Health Education: Educate inmates on medication compliance, basic health maintenance, and disease prevention as directed.
- Documentation: Accurately document care, treatments, and patient observations in electronic health records while maintaining confidentiality.
- Collaboration: Work closely with RNs, physicians, mental health staff, and correctional officers to support individualized care plans.
- Compliance & Safety: Follow state nursing regulations, facility policies, and security procedures to ensure the safety of inmates, staff, and healthcare personnel.
Qualifications
- Licensure: Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the state of Colorado, in good standing (or Compact Licensure accepted).
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in corrections, emergency, psychiatric, or high-acuity healthcare settings preferred.
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required
- Skills:
- Strong clinical and observational skills
- Ability to work independently in a secure environment
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems
