Our client supports critical global markets, including satellites, human-rated space vehicles, launch vehicles, missiles, military ground vehicles, naval vessels, and security surveillance systems.
We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer for Slip Rings to join the Space & Defense Group in Blacksburg, VA. Reporting directly to the Slip Ring Engineering Manager, you will play a pivotal role in taking complex electromechanical designs from initial concept all the way through to production and testing.

Key Responsibilities
- Conceptual Design & Analysis: Establish concepts and technical requirements to lead design efforts across mechanical, thermal, and electrical disciplines for high-reliability slip ring assemblies.
- Client & Supplier Interface: Act as the primary technical point of contact to interpret customer specifications and collaborate directly with suppliers and customers.
- Full Lifecycle Engineering: Lead designs from inception (bids and proposal phase) through detailed development, finite element analysis (FEA), and the creation of production drawings.
- Production Support: Provide ongoing technical support as products transition into production build and quality testing.
- Innovation & Collaboration: Support internal research and development (IR&D) efforts to expand on existing technology, and participate in peer design reviews to ensure documentation completeness and accuracy.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in the design and analysis of precision rotating electromechanical equipment.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in CAD/CAE tools and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Robust experience in mechanical design, specifically focusing on Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) for production hardware.
- Expert knowledge of drafting standards and the application/interpretation of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Industry Domain: Solid understanding of advanced machining/manufacturing capabilities. Experience in a peer-review environment ensuring accuracy of engineering prints.
