Job Title: Measurement Technician (Oil & Gas)
Position Summary
The Measurement Technician is responsible for the accurate, reliable, and compliant measurement of oil, natural gas, condensate, NGLs, and related products across production, gathering, pipeline, and custody-transfer facilities. The role ensures quantity and quality data meet contractual, regulatory, and company standards (API MPMS, AGA, GPA, and applicable federal/state rules such as BLM, RRC, or DOT). Work is primarily field-based and involves installation, calibration, proving, sampling, troubleshooting, and documentation of measurement systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, inspect, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair measurement equipment, including:
- Electronic flow meters (EFMs)/flow computers
- Orifice meters, Coriolis meters, ultrasonic meters, turbine meters, positive-displacement meters
- LACT units and related systems
- Pressure, temperature, and differential-pressure transmitters
- Gas chromatographs, analyzers (H₂S, CO₂, O₂, H₂O), and composite/spot samplers
- Perform or witness meter provings, orifice plate inspections/changes, and third-party custody-transfer calibrations; document results.
- Collect and handle oil, condensate, and gas samples; perform or support quality tests (gravity, BS&W, BTU, composition).
- Program, configure, and maintain electronic flow measurement devices and associated communications (radio, cellular, SCADA interfaces).
- Monitor volumes, detect measurement errors or lost-and-unaccounted-for product, apply corrections, and support volume allocations and system balances.
- Maintain accurate records, test schedules, calibration certificates, and audit-ready documentation in company systems (CMMS, FDM, SAP/Maximo, or equivalent).
- Ensure compliance with API, AGA, GPA, company standards, and regulatory requirements; support internal and external audits.
- Coordinate with operations, automation, engineering, accounting, and third-party purchasers; respond to measurement inquiries.
- Perform general facility upkeep related to measurement sites and practice strict HSE standards (PPE, LOTO, hazard recognition, emergency response).
- Work independently or with minimal supervision; respond to on-call needs, overtime, nights, weekends, and varying weather conditions as required.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (company vehicle use is common).
- 3+ years of relevant experience (depending on level), ideally in oil & gas measurement, instrumentation, production operations, or SCADA/automation.
- Ability to work outdoors in temperature extremes, climb (e.g., tanks or structures), lift 50+ lbs, and perform physical field tasks.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office; ability to learn measurement software and CMMS).
- Strong mechanical/electrical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
Preferred
- Technical certification in instrumentation, electronics, electrical technology, or related field.
- Experience with specific systems (Fisher ROC, Totalflow, CygNet, FMS, etc.).
- Working knowledge of API MPMS, AGA-3/14.3, GPA sampling standards, and custody-transfer practices.
- Prior experience with LACT units, meter proving, gas quality analysis, or pipeline measurement.
- Familiarity with low-voltage systems (12–24 VDC) and reading electrical/P&ID drawings.
Working Conditions
Field-based role supporting well sites, tank batteries, meter stations, and pipelines. Travel between locations is routine. Schedule is typically daytime with flexibility for call-outs, overtime, and occasional weekends/holidays. Physical demands and exposure to oilfield hazards (hydrocarbons, H₂S potential, weather) are inherent to the position.
