This position is responsible for Ensuring the integrity of specimens collected for urine drug screens by observing collection, tracking and maintaining control of specimens, and on weekends may perform laboratory analysis on the analyzer for the Drug Screening Laboratory, which is a 7-day per week laboratory used for court ordered drug screens. Work involves check in of clients reporting for testing, assisting with necessary paperwork, collecting payments, observing sample collection, and may require certification as an analyzer operator. Requires early morning hours and weekend work, with one weekend off per month. Schedule ranges from 20 – 29 hours per week, with varying schedules. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Observes and monitors urine specimen collection; the observer must be the same gender as the donor. Collects, prepares and may perform laboratory analysis of urine specimens. Reviews, records and reports test results. Follows safety policies and procedures. Maintains the chain of custody for all samples. Collects and properly disposes of specimens. Performs laboratory-related clerical duties, including filing, record-keeping, data entry, and distributing test results to appropriate parties. Checks and maintains inventory of standard laboratory supplies. Upholds and enforces all HIPAA requirements. Cleans laboratory work surfaces and disposes of waste in accordance with the department’s waste management plan.

A minimum of 2 years in a legal or medical setting, or a related field. Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; comfortable with data entry and computer operations. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is acceptable. Special Qualifications: Operator certificate on a drug screening analyzer will be required and can be attained after employment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficiency in typing and accurate data entry.
Competency in operating computers and laboratory software systems (e.g., Laboratory Information Systems). Skill in multitasking and managing priorities in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow technical instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) precisely.
Knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and procedures applicable to drug testing and laboratory operations. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and Federal Confidentiality Rule 42 CFR Part 2. Ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear documentation and reports. Ability to interact professionally and respectfully with clients, co-workers, and individuals who may be under stress or uncooperative.
Ability to testify in court regarding the chain of custody, specimen handling, and laboratory procedures, if required.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations relevant to lab functions.
Knowledge of basic laboratory safety and hygiene practices, including proper specimen handling and contamination prevention.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team with limited supervision.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting and operate office equipment.
Physical ability to stand or walk for extended periods while performing lab duties. Continuous sitting and upward and downward flexion of neck.
Fine finger dexterity. Light to moderate finger pressure to manipulate keyboard, equipment controls, and office equipment.
Pinch grasp to manipulate writing utensils. Frequent side-to-side turning of neck, walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting at waist. Moderate wrist torqueto twist equipment knobs and dials. Occasional squatting, kneeling, and reaching above and at shoulder height. Moderate grasping to manipulate reference books and manuals. Lifting objects weighing 20-35 lbs. from below waist to above shoulders and transporting distances up to 50 feet. Verbally communicate to exchange information. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment. Hearing: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing abilities that would permit effective communication with or without correction.
