Island Veterinary Center is seeking an experienced, dependable Veterinary Assistant who is passionate about pets and committed to provide high-quality care. This is a hands-on position requiring prior experience with safely handling and restraining companion animals in a veterinary setting.
Responsibilities
>Safely and effectively handling and restraining dogs and cats for examinations, vaccinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
>Assisting veterinarian and veterinarian technicians during patient examinations and procedures.
> Obtaining and accurately recording patient histories, weights, temperatures, and other information.
> Preparing examination and treatment areas for appointments and procedures.
> Being familiar with commonly used companion animal vaccines, medications, preventives, and treatments.
> Preparing vaccines, medications, supplies, and equipment as directed.
> Assisting with the collection and processing of blood, urine, fecal, and other diagnostic samples.
> Helping to prepare patients and equipment for radiographs, surgery, dental procedures, and other treatments.
> Monitoring patients and promptly reporting changes in their condition to the veterinarian or veterinary technician.
> Cleaning and disinfecting exmaination rooms, treatment areas kennels, instruments, and equipment.
> Maintaining accurate medical records.
> Following established safety and infection control procedures.
> Communicating professionally and compassionately with clients and coworkers.
> Assisting with stocking supplies, laundry, cleaning, and other duties necessary for the efficient operation of the clinic.
Required Qualifications
> Previous experience working as a veterinary assistant (two years).
> Demonstrated ability to safely and confidently restrain dogs and cats of different sizes and temperaments.
> Familiarity with vaccines, preventive products, medications, and treatments commonly used with companion animals.
> Ability to recognize signs of fear, pain, stress, aggression, or medical distress in pets.
> Ability to lift and carry approximately 40-50 pounds independently and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.
> Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, and remain physically active throughout the workday.
> Strong attention to detail and ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
> Dependable, punctual, and willing to assist wherever needed.
> Ability to remain calm and organized in a busy, fast-paced clinical environment.
> Professional communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude.
>Familiarity with electronic veterinary practice management systems such as Avimark.
> Experience with venipuncture, sample collection, laboratory testing, radiography, surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring, dental procedures, or pharmacy duties desirable.
Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
